May 20-24, 2024 Conference 'Women in Dynamical Systems and Ergodic Theory' in Pisa, Italy

Dear Colleagues,

We are organizing a conference “Women in Dynamical Systems and Ergodic Theory” at Centro di Ricerca Matematica Ennio De Giorgi, SNS, Pisa Italy May 20-24, 2024.

The purpose of the event is to promote women and gender minorities working on Dynamical Systems and Ergodic Theory: the speakers will consist of women and non-binary people whereas all genders are welcome to attend the conference. The topic will cover different aspects of dynamical systems and ergodic theory such as e.g. statistical properties, numeration systems, Teichmüller theory and give connections to other mathematical areas, e.g. to geometry, number theory, Diophantine approximation and logic. The target audience would particularly be young researchers who want to explore different research directions within the broad field of dynamical systems and ergodic theory but also more senior ones, wanting to broaden their research by getting connections to research areas which so far don't lie in their core research field. Indeed, we plan to give space also to researchers at initial phases of their career supporting their participation and offering them to propose a contributed talk.

The registration is open. Anyone interested is welcome to register. All relevant information and the registration form can be found on the website: http://www.crm.sns.it/event/522/

We have spots open for some contributed talks (follow the links on the webpage to submit a title and abstract).  Limited funds to cover accommodation expenses are available to early registered participants. The condition to obtain the financial support is to present a contributed talk.  The deadline for financial support is 15 January 2024. However, please understand that we will not cover travel costs. Funding decisions and decisions on contributed talks will be made by early February.

Please feel free to share this announcement with any groups, students, post docs, or scholars who might be interested in participating in this workshop.

If you have any questions, please contact us at women.in.dynamics.pisa@gmail.com

We hope to see many of you there!

Best wishes,

On behalf of organizers

June 6, 2024 WoBio Welcome Day

Dear colleagues in STEM,

We would like to invite you to the second WoBio Welcome Day at the Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Vienna (poster attached)! This event will introduce the Women in Biology (WoBio) initiative at the University of Vienna, and will have two exciting guest talks, followed by a buffet with food and drinks and informal discussions. The aim of this event is to facilitate networking and inspire action towards creating more equitable academic environments. We are looking forward to hearing about the challenges encountered by your members and actions taken to overcome them, and hope to find common ground for future actions!

Guest talks

First talk: The Citation Gap: Why Great Science by Women Gets Less Recognition

Abstract: Ever wondered why groundbreaking research by women in science sometimes gets less recognition? In this talk we'll dive into the fascinating world of scientific citations, uncovering the hidden reasons behind the gender gap. We'll explore how collaboration styles and even the timing of research breakthroughs can impact how science values a researcher's work. Join us to unveil the secrets of the "first-mover advantage" and discover how we can create a more level playing field for women in STEM fields.

Speakers: Dr. Ana María Jaramillo & Dr. Samuel Martin-Gutierrez, Network Inequality Group, Complexity Science Hub Vienna

Second talk: Equity in Science - Are we there yet?

Speaker: Dr. Charlotte Zajc, BOKU, podcaster of "Die Wissen schafft", (Twitter/X)

Abstract: TBA

Join us for insightful conversations and learn what we can do to advance equity, diversity and inclusion in academia! Please also forward this email to anyone that might be interested in the event, and feel free to put the poster up in your respective departments.

Kind regards,

September 22–27, 2024 The 11th Heidelberg Laureate Forum

The 11th Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF) will take place in Heidelberg, Germany between 22–27 September 2024.

At the HLF, all winners of the Fields Medal, the Abel Prize, the ACM A.M. Turing Award, the Nevanlinna Prize/IMU Abacus Medal, and the ACM Prize in Computing are invited to attend. In addition, young and talented computer scientists and mathematicians are invited to apply for participation. The previous HLFs have been an exceptional success. The HLF serves as a great platform for interaction between the masters in the fields of mathematics and computer science and young talents.

Over the course of the week-long conference, young researchers will be given the exclusive possibility to profoundly connect with their scientific role models and find out how the laureates made it to the top of their fields. As described by a young researcher, “Meeting the humans behind some of the most formidable inventions and discoveries of our time was phenomenal. What was unexpected, perhaps, was how warm and approachable these individuals turned out to be. I am grateful to have been given this opportunity, and to have shared it with peers who I hope to soon call colleagues, collaborators and friends."

Applications for participation at the 11th HLF are open in three categories: Undergraduate/Pre-Master, Graduate PhD, and PostDocs. The application period for the 11th HLF runs from 9 November 2023 until 9 February 2024.

Young researchers at all phases of their careers (Undergraduate/Pre-Master, Graduate PhD, or PostDocs) are encouraged to complete and submit their applications by 9 February (midnight CET).

See the webpage https://application.heidelberg-laureate-forum.org for the online application and nomination forms.

For questions regarding requirements and the application process, please contact Young Researchers Relations at: yr@heidelberg-laureate-forum.org .

All applications that are completed and submitted by the deadline are meticulously reviewed by an international committee of experts to ensure that only the most qualified candidates are invited. There are 100 spaces available for each discipline of mathematics and computer science. All applicants will be notified by the end of April 2024 whether or not they are invited.
