Level 3

Gather missing ancestors

Level 3 involves digging a little deeper to graft a family into the broader tree.
This will be done if the family still does not extend four or more generations in either direction after Level 2.

The video below will show some simple ways to research records to find more ancestors and expand outward
until the broader network is accessed.

Similarly to Level 2, in Level 3 you will need to expand the family's portion of the tree until you run into the broader FamilyTree. Below you'll find three of the most helpful tools to do this.

  1. Attach sources and gather clues. The blue square icons on a person's page represent Record Hints. You can review and attach these; they often include new information about the person's family. Update the person's page with new dates, places, and names as you find them. This allows the computer to find even more sources--you're looking for additional family members, like parents or spouses, so you can add them and expand the family.

  2. Merge possible duplicates. There are a lot of duplicate person pages on the Family Tree, and chances are that a duplicate of the person you're working on is already connected to the broader tree. Merge the two duplicates into one to tighten the Tree and graft in the family you're working on.

  3. Check out Ancestry for more sources. You can set up a free account with Ancestry and easily search their large database directly from a person's page by clicking the Ancestry icon. Once you choose a record, you'll see additional records for the same person pop up on the right.

You can use these three tools to find out more about the main person on the record or any of their family members. If you reach a dead end for one person, try working on another one of their family members.

For example, in the video above, Joe searches for information about the person of interest, but he also explores a bit about his mother, father, and brother. All these provide helpful clues that push the work forward!
