The Michigan Census Project

Community Reconstitution

The vision

Let's put Michigan on the Family Tree!

Welcome to our effort to connect our community with the past.

Using FamilySearch.org, we're going to reconstitute (rebuild)

the entirety of historic Michigan from the early 1900s

by ensuring that every resident is present

on the world's largest family tree.

You can learn and do as much as you'd like.

Every bit counts as we bring together today's community

by reconnecting it with yesterday's!

The Two-Fold Mission

Get each person from the census onto the Family Tree

The census tells us who used to live here, but it's our job to make sure that they become a part of the Family Tree by adding people, attaching sources, and merging duplicates. This connects us as a community to see how we are related to each other!

Attach content-rich sources to individuals' profiles

Just knowing names and dates isn't enough. By attaching sources like yearbooks, newspaper clippings and more, we can show who these people really are and make it possible for descendants to share photos and memories for years to come!

The Process

This website will teach you how you can be a part of this project.

Each consecutive page will lead you through

Levels 1, 2, and 3 of the project.

As you practice each level, you'll prepare yourself to level up and do even more parts of this important work.
