In the Social Network, computer reliability is always brought up in the context of finance. Numerous times throughout the film, Mark Zuckerberg checks in with his business partner Eduardo Saverin to ensure that there are always sufficient funds to purchase the necessary server power needed to run Facebook. This becomes very important as Zuckerberg bases the entire reputation of the site on uptime. He remarks in the movie, "We don't crash, ever! if the servers are down for even a day our entire reputation is irreversibly destroyed!" This remark is made after Saverin freezes the bank account that funds the servers.
The concept that Zuckerberg is describing is very similar to what is known as five 9s uptime. Five 9s uptime is an uptime of 99.999%, or in other words, a downtime of six seconds every year. For critical infrastructure and high-performing web services, five 9s uptime is considered a gold standard of service.
