The COVID-19 pandemic has definitely provided lots of new vocabulary terms that are sure to be on history tests many years from now. Terms like social distance, self-quarantine and stay-at-home-order are now terms we use every day. For the students at South Kingstown High School, Virtual Learning has become very prevalent in our everyday lives. Students began this new way of learning on March 23 and will continue to use this method of learning until school ends in June. Each day students log in to a Google Meet. This is a video conference where students and teachers can talk to each other and explain the plan for the day. Teachers have the ability to teach on this site because they are able to share their screen so that they can present PowerPoints or the assignment for the day. Teachers will also post messages on Google Classroom outlining the assignment and providing any extra information.
South Kingstown High School Students begin each day at 8:00 by signing into their first period class. They then have 55 minutes for the teacher to teach a lesson. If the teacher does not need the entire 55 minutes to talk to the class, students are able to log off and complete their assignments on Google Classroom. Second period begins at 9:00 and third period begins at 10:00. Students get an hour and a half lunch break at 11:00. This is a great time for students to get some lunch, move around or complete their work. Students log back in for their final class at 12:30 to complete their day. This schedule still follows the 'blue and white day' pattern and gives students lots of flexibility to move at their own pace.
When students were in school together, a school project might have been a poster, power point presentation or a physical model, but now students must learn new ways to present ideas online. SK's URI Writing 104 classes has been doing just that as they create collegiate level multi-modal projects from their homes. Click below to browse through some student work!
Not only do teachers have the ability to provide lessons, students are also able to participate in meetings for their extracurricular clubs and activities as well. For example, SK's student wellness group, RIPL has been hosting weekly meetings to brainstorm ways to spread positive messages and continue to teach students about wellness in these times. Other clubs such as Peer to Peer and Project Venue have also been able to meet to check up on their members and continue to plan school events like a virtual open mic night. SK's choir Eskape even put on a virtual concert which can be found at the link below!
High School students are only a portion of those adjusting to online learning in our South Kingstown Community. Every student in every grade across all 7 elementary, middle and high schools in SK has been rising to this new challenge. The video below created by Corey Lennon exemplifies student work across all grade levels, and how the South Kingstown School District is coming together as a community.
Virtual learning has created many positive aspects for students. Here are our top 5 great things about virtual learning:
Sleeping in! Though the normal school day only started a half an hour earlier, students get more time to sleep in because there is no morning commute!
Cozy classes. Students now have the luxury to make every day pajama day if they desire! They can also complete classes from anywhere in their home. You don't even have to get out of bed!
Working at your own pace. Virtual school allows students time to do everything on their own time. This allows students to either get their work done faster, or spend more time to complete each assignment.
Staying safe. While the world is in a global pandemic, it is definitely the safest option to complete school at home. This is a way to do our part for our South Kingstown community and our state.
More time for hobbies. The virtual school days are shorter and students do not have as many extracurricular activities, so if you get your work done, you have more time to try new hobbies and activities that you might not have had time for before!
Though virtual learning has its perks, it also doesn't quite capture some of the best parts of school as we know it. Here are the top 5 downsides about this type of schooling:
Not seeing your friends and teachers every day. Though we video chat every day, it's not quite the same as seeing friends in the halls and socializing during class.
Not participating in clubs and sports teams. We miss cheering for the Rebels and representing our school in the ways we are most passionate!
Technology has its issues. Teachers glitch and buffer in the middle of lessons, students' microphones get broken, people have constant WiFi problems; there are some difficulties that happen on a daily basis.
Missing School Spirit. SKHS has so much to offer and very rich traditions that make being a Rebel so much fun such as SKpades, Prom and Graduation! Though we are still proud to be Rebels virtually, we can't help but miss the constant buzz of spirit throughout the halls.
Not having the full High School Experience. No matter what grade you are in, you are bound to miss out on something important to you that just makes the high school experience so special.
