On Friday March 13, 2020, students at South Kingstown High School pulled up to school like any normal day. They parked their cars or hopped off the bus, went to their lockers and waited for that bell to ring. They followed their normal schedules, went to class, ate lunch and talked about exciting happenings for the weekend like the 70th SKpades performance and the championship hockey game. Though the new COVID-19 virus was beginning to pop up on the news and some precautions were beginning to take place, it was just about the last thing on students' minds before they entered 4th period. It seemed as if everybody in the school was watching as Gina Raimondo held her press conference about her decision to cancel school for a week. Students were filled with mixed emotions. They were not sure if they should be happy or upset about receiving a week or two off from school, but after the last bell rang, the halls felt quiet and something felt off. Little did these students know, March 13, 2020 was going to be their last in school day of the 2019-20 school year. Governor Raimondo checked week by week to see if it was safe enough to go back to school, and the cancellations continued. It wasn't until mid April that she cancelled the rest of the school year completely. The students now felt saddened that that could not see their friends and teachers in the SK hallways until the next year. For the seniors, this meant never again walking the halls as a student and an abrupt ending to their High School experience.
Once school got cancelled, Rhode Island schools switched to virtual learning, where every class would be taken over by video chat. Learn more about South Kingstown High School's approach to virtual learning, as well as how successful it has been by clicking above!
