On March 13, the class of 2020 had no idea that this would be their last day of high school. Their last day going class to class, walking through the halls, using their locker, and just being a student in person at SKHS. Everything they have looked forward to has been cancelled, such as Spring sports season, prom, graduation, senior trip and lots of other events that make being a senior so much fun. The class of 2020 will never forget this year, and this surreal experience that has made them stronger as a class and ready to take the next big step into their futures.
Updates:
The State of Rhode Island still does not allow groups larger than 5 to gather in public areas. This means that all 200+ members of the senior class will not be able to celebrate with their friends in person for normal senior events any time soon. Instead, many events will take place virtually. There will be a virtual Honors Night, as well as a virtual Graduation Ceremony for students. How can a graduation be virtual, you might ask? Students have been scheduled for five minute increments during which they will go to SKHS to be filmed walking across the stage and receiving their diploma (which will later be mailed out to them.) These little clips, along with all the graduation speeches, will be woven together into a video that will air on the SKHS YouTube page on the day of the regularly scheduled graduation, June 12. Students and families will still be able to watch this graduation and celebrate in each of their households. Though this is a major change, SKHS is trying to celebrate the seniors as best they can, while also following instructions from the state of Rhode Island and the CDC.
The community recognizes that the seniors are not able to celebrate as they normally would. However, many people are still trying to recognize the accomplishments of the Class of 2020. The SKHS parent group recognized the seniors by giving all students a yard sign that says 'Celebrating the Class of 2020' on it. This way when people go by, each student is recognized. They also wrote a nice letter to each senior congratulating them on their accomplishments and added a Rebels 2020 sticker inside! T-shirts were also sold for seniors that said Rowdy Rebels Class of 2020 to commemorate their year further. Additionally, Jerilyn, a local photographer, has been going around town taking photos of all the seniors next to their signs to celebrate. She posts all these photos on her Facebook page JLPhotography; you can click here to visit her page. The town of South Kingstown also planned an event on Wednesday May 20, when people turned their lights on at 8:20 for 20 minutes and 20 seconds to celebrate the class. Our community has really stepped up to make sure the class is celebrated.
Though students in the Class of 2020 will be moving on in the fall, there will still be more events to celebrate them in the future. The 2020 Class officers are working closely with the class advisors to plan more fun events when it is safe to celebrate. This includes a celebration in December when students can come to the school and reconnect with friends and teachers while walking down memory lane inside of SKHS. The details for this event are not completely finalized quite yet, but it is sure to be a fun event for all. They are also planning a one year reunion event for the summer of 2021 where students can choose different activities to participate in during this time. The details for this event are not finalized either, but it would be a weekend where students can reconnect yet again. The Sports Banquet for SK athletes has also been moved to December when athletes can be recognized for their accomplishments in sports throughout their high school career. SKHS administration and staff are doing everything in their power to try and plan fun events and not forget our senior class.
Curious about what these seniors will be up to in the future? You can visit the Class of 2020 Instagram page to find out each student's future plans. This account is run by class office, and seniors submit their plans to be shared with the community! This account is updated daily!

Different teachers and staff from South Kingstown created video messages for the senior class wishing them luck and saying their goodbyes. These clips were put together to make a large video for the seniors to watch. The short clips of each teacher were also posted to a Flipgrid where students can comment and view their original messages. Click the 2 underlined titles above to view!
Dear Seniors,
As Class Officers, you have entrusted us with power by electing the few of us to lead our class. There was no way anyone could have predicted that we would have to lead through some of the darkest times for our community and our world. The prom, senior trip, graduation ceremony, and more were all robbed from you. There is no finger to point and no one to blame; this was unavoidable. People who have graduated or haven’t yet may say that we don’t understand or “it’s not all that great.” But they don’t understand that you were robbed. It was not just the ceremonies and events. It was the final days in the halls, the last bell ring. It was the teachers standing on the building near the senior lot to say goodbye. Those people, they had their opportunity; whether they enjoyed it does not dictate what you should have been able to experience. With, emphasis on the word “should.” We as leaders promise you that we will turn that “should” into a “will.” You have elected us to lead, which includes the bright and the dark times. So you will get what you were robbed of. We will not get our celebration today. We will not get it tomorrow. But believe us when we say that there will be a day. You will, non-virtually, celebrate your time at SKHS with all of your classmates. What those events look like, we do not know, however, we are positive that these events will be far better than the original plans. For now, we will celebrate how we can. Between the senior video and the commitment post, we are doing our best to stay connected with you. Although these are great, they are not the victory lap we envisioned. With time, these virtual celebrations will fade, and you will get the opportunity to make up for the lost time. Those days are numbered. This is not the first dark time we have encountered. Remember that we are strong. The skills and abilities you have acquired from this experience will only stand to benefit you in the future. We will enter the world with far more experience and talent than any other class ever. Lastly, we would like to say, focus on the “will.” Today is not the day, but it’s coming soon. We promise it will.
