Clubhouse International
Overview:
Clubhouse International is a membership organization representing over 350 member Clubhouse programs that are locally managed and found in nearly 40 US states and more than 32 countries on six continents. The work of Clubhouse International is to support people living with mental illness worldwide by expanding, strengthening, and advocating for Clubhouse communities. Clubhouse International provides a single point of entry to engage the largest and most effective network of psychosocial rehabilitation service providers in the world.
The Mission and Vision of Clubhouse International:
Our Vision: A world where people with mental illness recover and are an integral part of society.
Our Mission: Ending social and economic isolation for people with mental illness by growing the number and quality of Clubhouse rehabilitation programs worldwide
The Four Interrelated Roles of Clubhouse International:
1. NEW CLUBHOUSE DEVELOPMENT: On an annual basis, Clubhouse International helps more than 50 Startup groups from around the world to open a Clubhouse in their local community. 80% of New Clubhouse training groups successfully open a new clubhouse and each of these new clubhouse programs will reach on average 50 or more people every day who are living with mental illness.
2. TRAINING: Clubhouse International offers a full curriculum of training programs through the 12 International Training Center Clubhouses. Training involves full immersion in the Clubhouse to learn how they operate and the tasks involved in creating a successful Clubhouse. Clubhouse International also promotes training and learning experiences through national and international Clubhouse conferences.
3. QUALITY ASSURANCE: Clubhouse International helps Clubhouses deliver high-quality programs and services through the Clubhouse Accreditation process. Accredited Clubhouses have better results than non-accredited Clubhouses and so Clubhouse International provides accreditation and ensures conformance with International Standards for Clubhouse Programs™ and practices.
4. ADVOCACY: Clubhouse International partners with other leading mental health advocates at the local, national, and international levels to end social discrimination towards people living with mental illness, and to address the inadequate levels of government funding for mental healthcare as part of overall healthcare. Our Clubhouse International team regularly presents and advocates for the Clubhouse Model in mental health and social service forums.

Clubhouse Training
As the number and quality of Clubhouses grew during the two Clubhouse expansion projects in the 1980s, the need for training and consultation has also grown. New Clubhouse staff, board members as well as Clubhouse members are eager to better understand the many opportunities offered in a Clubhouse and learn best practices in Clubhouse operations. For those staff and members who have been part of a Clubhouse for a while, having the benefit of training provides new ideas, innovations, and strategies to improve the Clubhouse experience and meet the needs of its membership.
Clubhouse International coordinates training offered at 12 International Training Centers, Each training center is a well-established, high-quality Clubhouse operating in locations around the world. Clubhouse Training is an opportunity to learn and experience Clubhouse philosophy, culture, relationships, and the day-to-day operations of a Clubhouse. All training is grounded in the International Standards for Clubhouse Programs. These standards are often referred to as a "Bill of Rights" for members and the 37 standards cover every aspect of Clubhouse operations acting as a guide for the development of Clubhouse programming. The Clubhouse International website posts the training calendar for the various training centers, however, each training center will coordinate its planning and logistics. Contact the training center you are interested in to learn more and arrange for training.
Benefits of Clubhouse Training:
Clubhouse staff, members and Directors: By regularly sending a team to training, Clubhouses continue to improve their services, meet the continued and emerging needs of members, and grow their Clubhouses in their communities.
Clubhouse Board Members: By attending a World or Regional Seminar, or being part of a Comprehensive Training as an administrator, Clubhouse Board and Advisory Board members deepen their understanding of the program they are supporting and help the Clubhouse to become stronger in their communities.
Parent/Auspice Agency Administrators: Similar to the experience for Board members, Managers from the agency that supports a Clubhouse can better understand the International Standards and support the Clubhouse in executing the standards by attending World and Regional seminars and/or attending Comprehensive training as the administrator.
Funders: Donors, Foundations, and Government funders can benefit from Clubhouse training to better understand, support, and advocate for the service they are funding. For those who are tasked with quality management and accountability, training can provide a more in-depth understanding of services provided by an Accredited Clubhouse.
Community Members interested in starting a Clubhouse: New Clubhouse Development Training is for you! This training provides practical tools to start a Clubhouse in your area, and mentoring through the stages of development.
Details of Clubhouse training and its cost can be accessed by visiting the Clubhouse International website or by contacting any of the twelve training sites directly with the contact information provided on the Clubhouse International site. The following is a brief description of training options:
Comprehensive Clubhouse Training: This is a two-week immersive training opportunity held at the Training Centers and is the foundational training in the Clubhouse model. The training team (members & staff) spends two weeks involved in all aspects of the training center giving them a solid background in basic Clubhouse operations. The curriculum includes daily readings and discussions covering the 37 International Standards for Clubhouse Programs™ and how they are operationalized. Teams leave with an action plan they develop that outlines goals and action steps their Clubhouse can take to improve in areas they identify.
One-Week Specialty Training: These one-week opportunities provide a more in-depth examination of different aspects of the clubhouse. While located at the training center, training participants spend more time in discussions addressing topics important to the specialty area. Not all Training Centers offer these so be sure to check the Clubhouse International website for scheduled training. A sample curriculum is attached to each.
New Clubhouse Development Training: This training specifically targets new working groups that are seeking guidance with the initial steps in starting a Clubhouse. The training is an intensive and interactive two-day session that draws from the experience of many of the most successful Clubhouse International Clubhouses. Each group leaves with an action plan and is assigned a Clubhouse International consultant who provides up to a year of ongoing mentoring and support.
This biennial seminar organized by Clubhouse International brings Clubhouse staff and members from around the world together for five days. Each day is organized with daily plenary and workshop sessions led by Clubhouse members and staff identified as leaders in the topic being addressed. Workshops are organized to maximize interactive discussion. The seminar usually attracts 700 - 1000 attendees.
Europe, Asia, and the USA organize smaller, regional three-day seminars between World Seminars.
State Conferences
State coalitions often organize a one or two-day conference on the Clubhouse Model each year.
Held quarterly, these hour-long webinars address different areas of Clubhouse operations. They are recorded and WANA Webinars can be viewed on YouTube for continuing education.
