I expect it has stemmed from other graphical file formats that are acronyms. For example, JPEG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, etc. I think I'm guilty of falling into capitalising it more out of habit (from reading other people) than from anything else. Perhaps we should start a campaign to write 'raw' in lowercase and see if we can get it to catch on...

You're kidding, right? While not an acronym or proper name (each brand has its own RAW format and name), it's the name the covers all the brand specific RAW formats. As JPEG, TIFF, GIF, PSD, CPT, etc. have all capital letters, so does RAW; certainly a lot better than naming all the different RAW formats).

But JPEG, PSD, etc all are acronyms which is why they are capitalised. RAW (oops... raw) isn't - it is just the "raw data" i.e. the untouched, unprocessed data out of the sensor. So it would make sense to just say "I shoot in raw" rather than "I shoot in RAW", but as already speculated, this tradition has probably arisen from people listing other formats capitalised.

Zed is our tortoise inventor and is helping us learn about capital letters. He loves using his tools to make things in his shed. All of the sentences above Zed's shed have their capital letters missing. Can you correct the sentences and then give Zed one of his tools so he can make a new invention? The longer answer is that "small caps" were developed for use within running text so that "all capitals," when you stand back and squint, have a similar texture and color to the regular surrounding text. This was typically a hand-crafted font and not just a smaller point size.

Personally I have used them in the past and even done things like "Technological backgrounD," but my current taste is all caps or nothing. I think that if you are thinking about it and you think it looks "not so great," then trust your judgement and go with all caps. Use a Display Titles font if available and maybe increase the tracking (letter spacing) slightly.

The particular typeface you're using doesn't have true Small Caps, so the initial cap is slightly bolder than the rest of the word (because these "small caps" are just capitals at a smaller point size). It looks ugly.

This is an interesting problem. I can understand that aesthetically, you might prefer to see all letters in Small-Caps, but if the word(s) need a capital for the first letter (such as a city, name of a person etc), then it must have this for future proofing the content, or delivery in some other form.

With these best practices, your users will not only enjoy great looking images that work seamlessly, but search engines will also be happy because your images were properly optimized for crawling, indexing and in turn, help them determine the general intent of the page.

The objective is to identify each of a large number of black-and-white rectangular pixel displays as one of the 26 capital letters in the English alphabet. The character images were based on 20 different fonts and each letter within these 20 fonts was randomly distorted to produce a file of 20,000 unique stimuli. Each stimulus was converted into 16 primitive numerical attributes (statistical moments and edge counts) which were then scaled to fit into a range of integer values from 0 through 15. We typically train on the first 16000 items and then use the resulting model to predict the letter category for the remaining 4000. See the article cited below for more details.

The research for this article investigated the ability of several variations of Holland-style adaptive classifier systems to learn to correctly guess the letter categories associated with vectors of 16 integer attributes extracted from raster scan images of the letters. The best accuracy obtained was a little over 80%. It would be interesting to see how well other methods do with the same data. 17dc91bb1f
