Sunday?
Yes, this game is running on a Sunday, which isn’t typical for one-day Larp events. We've chosen this to fit around the venue's schedule and keep ticket costs low. Though we would prefer to run on a Saturday, the associated costs would massively inflate the price. Every venue search requires some level of compromise, and this is the main one we’ve made! On that note...
The Venue
We have exclusive use of Nottingham Playhouse for the day(!) including the whole stage and auditorium, along with dressing rooms, greenroom, and a variety of breakout spaces. A handful of backstage spaces will be closed off for safety reasons (and clearly marked as such.)
The theatre opened in the 1960s, so is built in keeping with modern health and safety standards. However it does still have some large drops and trip-hazards in places, more than you might be used to from more conventional Larp venues. For this reason we will be asking everyone to move no faster than a brisk walk, and refrain from any staged combat, grappling or other types of uncontrolled movement.
After discussion with the venue we’ve agreed it’s sensible that anyone wanting to explore the venue beyond a few central locations should be accompanied by a member of crew at all times. We will have a good number of people on hand to facilitate this, but there may be times when you need to wait to visit certain places.
Access
The sign up form includes a space to make us aware of any access requirements or requests. Some specific elements of the game we think are relevant include:
There is level access across every space that will be used over the course of the game thanks to a series of lifts, aside from some of the dressing rooms. If this is an issue for you, we will make sure to assign your character to a dressing room with level access.
The venue has a small number of parking spaces for Blue Badge Holders, just outside on North Circus Street and East Circus Street.
This game involves a moderate amount of written material, primarily the play-text itself as well as a pregame character brief (no more than two sides of A4) and a handful of shorter in-game briefings and roleplay effects. These can all be provided in particular fonts or audio format on request.
Any Performer character (except for the Crew) will be expected to do a lot of reading aloud in front of people, but you do not need to do so fluently or confidently, even if your character is written as an experienced actor.
The venue has a dedicated quiet room which will be open throughout the event.
The stage will be lit with stage lights throughout the dress rehearsal section of the game. There will be no strobe or flashing lights.
This Larp will run to a pre-established schedule including two 15 minute out-of-character breaks. Your character will be called away to at least one solo "blackbox" scene during the game, the timing for which can be made available on request.
Costume & Kit
This is a game set in the modern-day, so there are no particular requirements for costume as long as your are dressed appropriately for a day of rehearsals. Your character brief may tell you things about your character's personality or profession that you can express through clothing. If in doubt, we suggest wearing "stage blacks", which is simply comfortable, practical, all-black clothing
If your character will be on stage, we encourage you to bring another costume for the dress rehearsal. The directors have chosen an "eclectic" visual style for the play, so this could be an old baseball cap, or a full ballgown, or something more left-of-field.
There will be a dedicated, private changing area which we expect everyone to use for any costume changes that require undressing.
Food & Drink
This is not a catered event. You will need to bring your own food, or arrange to have some delivered to the venue. There will be some basic snacks provided, as well as drinking water taps scattered across the venue (we suggest bringing a water bottle!)
The theatre has a green room with a fridge and microwave which you are welcome to use.
Travel
Car: The venue does not have dedicated parking spaces, aside from a small number of spaces for Blue Badge Holders. There is cashless on-street parking in the area, as well as NCP car parks on Mount Street (200m away) and James Street (500m away).
Train: Nottingham train station is just over 1km away from the venue. There are regular tram and several bus stops within 300m.
Hotels: This is not an overnight event. If you want to stay in Nottingham the night before or after, you will need to make your own arrangements. There is a Premier Inn across the street on Chapel Bar, and many more hotels within a short distance.
