What a class this has been. When I first enrolled in English 1102 after having taken English 1101 over the summer, I was expecting something a little bit different. My 1101 class dealt with a lot of analyses of multimodal components of literature, but this class was something completely different. Throughout the Fall ‘22 semester, I learned about everything from conducting interviews, to creating a website, all the way to creating my own memes. With the Generation Project, I learned how to come at a topic in the most in-depth way possible. All of the different components of the topic tie together to create one comprehensive and cohesive presentation. This came from my Generational Overview which provided a brief summary of the topic, almost like reading the back of a book to get a quick idea of what everything is going to be about. Then we went into my Focus Years Research which to stick with the same analogy, was similar to the book itself, during this portion I learned how to conduct extensive scholarly research and put it into a format that was easy to understand. The Generational Artifacts, almost acted as a cherry on top of the rest of the project, providing the audience with visual components of the era to look back on and compare to any other period of time. The last part of this project was the Collaborative Overview. This part is what really showed me how to tie all the different parts of the projects together, how to lead into things, and initiate the bulk of the material. During this part of the project, we took all of the pieces mentioned prior, as well as an interactive timeline, and displayed and presented all of it together so that it was not only clear and visually appealing, but also extremely informative and comprehensive.
During the second half of the class, I completed another large project. We took a similar approach but it was at the same time very different and offered me a fantastic way to compare and contrast the different ways of presenting the information. For, in the first project we took multiple different components of the same topic and tied them all together creating a very in-depth project. However, during the second project, we worked on all the different ways you are able to present information on the same topic. The big bulk of this was focused on the Research Article in which we presented the information we found in a scientific research paper. During the project, we also learned how to conduct a scholarly interview. This was shown in my Interview Write Up that I conducted over the course. One of the biggest things I think I learned across the class as a whole, took part during this interview. That was when you are formulating and asking questions, you should never ask something that they are able to answer was a simple yes or no. We then moved into creating an Infographic on our topic. Given that it is such a small area to work with, we were not able to put in big texts blacks like a research article. Rather, it immediately had to capture the audience's attention and be extremely visually appealing so that they would want to read it. On top of this, it needs to have the most important information on the topic portrayed in a clear manner so that it gets your point across quickly. Lastly, I learned how to create an informative video through our Radical Revision. Through this, it made me very aware of tone, pitch, and all the visual components that go into a video that people will not only want to click on but also one that people will want to watch all the way through.
Somewhere in the middle of the class, we worked on digital culture. During this portion, we conducted a Meme Analysis, in which we took a look at the different parts of a meme and what went into creating a popular meme as well as why. I stated, “Since the conception of the internet, memes have been used as a way to convey information. Whether it be genuinely important information, political satire, or humor. They are used as a way of displaying "culturally-relevant" ideas.” which shared why memes are created. We then went to create our own in Created Meme. Lastly, during this part of the class, we analyzed the different dialects that people used on the internet during our Reading The Internet assignment. An example of this would be when analyzing big educational YouTubers I stated that “They all seem to follow a very similar language pattern that consists of the following: short, concise, animated, very precise diction, slightly elevated vocabulary, emphasis on the keywords.”.
