Welcome to Your Journey with Jesus!
As a believer, here are some things that’ll equip you. I will say that this isn’t about a religious to-do checklist. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, "It is by grace you have been saved, through faith; and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; not by works, so that no one can boast.” You first have to understand God’s sacrifice for you. When you believed the Gospel, that love was revealed, and you were Born Again by receiving His Spirit (which I’ll dive deeper into in another section).
Everything in your walk is based on, and comes out from relationship and intimacy with Him. We love Him because He loved us first, but it’s more than just feelings. Your devotion is shown by how you live. The goal is to honor God with all your heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37-38). Not to check boxes to stay loved. It’s realizing that you are so valued by Him that you can’t help but respond with your life.
It shifts your focus away from what you can get, and towards who He actually is. We may not realize it, but a lot of us treat God like a vending machine for our needs. Although we can ask God for things, we must approach with a heart of gratitude. It starts with Psalm 100:4 "Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name". This is what moves you from the outside gates into the inner room. When you only ask for things, you’re focused on your problems. When you praise Him, you’re focused on His character. Thats the difference between a child who only talks to their parents when they want a toy and a child who sits on their lap just because they want to be close. When your relationship with Him is the focus, your life and actions will naturally show it. It’s simply what happens when your heart is full.
True gratitude is acknowledging His worth. It’s saying, "Lord, even if You never did another thing for me, who You are is enough." When you start your day by magnifying Him, thanking Him for His faithfulness, His character, your problems look small because your view of God is growing. You receive the peace of His presence before you even mention any of your needs.
Intimacy with God happens the same way as any relationship does: by dedicating your time, honesty, attention, and access. You can spend years living under the same roof as someone and still be strangers if you only ever focus on yourself. You have a routine, but no connection.
We do the same with God when we talk at Him instead of with Him. Prayer starts to change when its no longer a list of demands, but sincere desire to be near Him. We stop asking for His hand and start seeking His heart. The conversation turns into: "Lord, I want to know what moves You. Just being near You makes me want to grow."
It's a matter of where our heart is. We can sometimes find ourselves longing for Heaven without actually desiring God Himself. But if we want to be with Him forever, shouldn't we want to be with Him now? In Psalm 42:2 it says "My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with Him?"
Walking with God means sharing your life with all access to it. Talk to Him throughout the day: involve Him in your decisions, lean on Him when things get hard, and share the small things. Jesus showed this by constantly going away to be with the Father, showing us that intimacy is found in the "all day," not just "check-ins."
You have to be honest about the messy parts. Hebrews 4:15–16 says, "We have a High Priest who sympathizes with our weaknesses, so we can come boldly to Him for help". Tell Him what you’re afraid of or when you’re disappointed. He already knows, but the relationship goes deeper when you invite Him into the truth of it anyway. God reveals Himself to those who stay close, not those who stay perfect.
The Christian walk was not meant for you to admire God from a distance; it’s a daily choice of companionship. Jesus said, “Abide in Me” John 15:4. That means stay, remain, and be connected. Have you ever experienced being in a room with a stranger and the silence could feel uncomfortable. But with someone you truly know, that silence could be peace.
As you grow with Jesus, you will find that you don't always need words. Deep connections can be made by simply being together while the Lord searches your heart. (Psalm 139:23–24). He'll stir your spirit and will align your desires with His. When you involve the Holy Spirit and delight in Him, your actions will begin to shift on their own. You don’t obey to earn closeness; you obey because you no longer want to feel distance.
Above all that I give you, the Bible is your real guide, and the Holy Spirit will show you exactly what to do, otherwise this is a solid starter pack just to get you on your way. Now everything else will flow naturally, not from pressure but from love.
Receive & Live in The Holy Spirit
First, who is the Holy Spirit? What He is not is a 'feeling' or a 'force'. He is the third person of the Trinity, fully God, and He is called the 'Spirit of Truth.' Jesus called Him our Helper, meaning He is the one called to walk with us believers. He has a mind, a will, and a deep love for you. He is literally Jesus’ presence living inside you, always pointing you back to Him as well as the truth of Gods’ Word.
The moment you repent, truly believe in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, and surrender your life to Him, you are Born Again. This is needed to enter the Kingdom of God. John 3:3, “Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” When the Holy Spirit comes to live within you, He renews and transforms you from the inside out. Titus 3:5, “He saved us… through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.” Your old self is crucified with Christ, and you are raised to walk in the newness of life. Free from sin’s power, with a new heart and spirit (Romans 6:4–6; Romans 8:2; Ezekiel 36:26).
He strengthens you when you’re weak, helps you see things clearly in Spirit and when life gets confusing, helps you live out your faith. Now we're not just "talking about it," but "being about it." Without Him, overcoming temptation, denying the flesh, walking in holiness, or fulfilling God’s purpose would be impossible. Also, the baptism of the Holy Spirit equips you to live and speak in boldness for Jesus, giving you the ability to love others with His heart. The Holy Spirit seals you for redemption. God marks you as His. His child, heir, and now you can be fully secure in Him. That seal guarantees that you belong to God, and nothing can separate you from His love.
The Holy Spirit communicates in different ways, but He will always be in alignment with Scripture. He will never contradict God's Word (1 John 4:1) or Character. He will guide you (John 16:13) and always point you back to Jesus. There is no limit to how He can speak and He can literally use anything and everything to do it, but here are the most common ways:
The Word: While reading Scripture, a specific verse might "jump out" at you with new meaning or feel like a direct answer to your current situation.
The "Still, Small Voice": Just as He did with Elijah (1 Kings 19:12), He often speaks in a gentle whisper or an inner prompting that requires you to be quiet and still to hear.
The Witness of Peace: A deep, internal "knowing" or assurance. Romans 8:16 says the Spirit "bears witness with our spirit." It is similar to a "gut feeling" that brings peace.
Conviction (The "Check"): He speaks by making you feel uncomfortable when you are heading toward a mistake or sin (John 16:8). This isn't a voice of shame, but a loving "tug" to draw you back on track.
Godly Counsel: He often speaks through the wisdom and advice of other believers (Proverbs 11:14).
Dreams and Visions: He can use images or dreams to speak to your heart, especially in seasons of seeking Him (Acts 2:17).
Creation & Circumstances: He may use the natural world (Psalm 19:1), specific timing, places, or even an audible voice (Acts 8:29) to get your attention.
The more you go deeper, the more you understand His Character and His sense of guidance. This is how you recognize His voice among all the others. Jesus said, “My sheep listen to My voice; I know them and they follow me" John 10:27. Start small. Ask Him for guidance in a decision, wait, pay attention to His response, follow Him and watch Him move in your life.
Quiet your mind and learn to listen. Always test what you sense and put it into action. Obedience matters! Ignoring Him or even delay can grieve or quench the Spirit (Ephesians 4:30, 1 Thessalonians 5:19). Think about it, you don't want to hurt the One that seals you for Heaven! If you don't check yourself, it can turn into spiritual dryness, a calloused heart making it even harder to hear Him. You can miss opportunities, or even receive discipline from God! (Hebrews 12:6)
But don't panic if you stumble. Anyones relationship has moments of friction. So be honest, because unconfessed sin dulls our love and gives the enemy a foothold to bring accusations against you (Revelation 12:10; Zechariah 3:1-2). We dont want that! So confess, be cleansed so the accuser has no charge to bring. True repentance makes a way for Him to move again and restores relationship. So turn back to Him with a whole heart. If you feel broken hearted over how far you gone, just know there is no condemnation. Jesus is still calling and wanting you back! He says, "Remember where you have fallen; repent and do the first works” Revelation 2:4-5. He just wants you back home, not as a roommate, but One who wants that intimacy back.
Stay Close to Jesus & His Word
Jesus is your source of faith and life itself. Psalm 91:1–2 “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty." His presence becomes a protective covering that guards your heart and mind. Don't wait for things to go to shambles to run to Him; make the daily choice to stay under that shelter.
When you read the Bible, you're not just reading just to read; you are looking for Jesus. Life can get busy, but if you stay close to Him, your peace, direction, strength will become unshakeable. The Bible isn't just a book; it's God's living Word. It shows His promises, His plans, His perspective, giving you wisdom to walk out life, and what He already accomplished.
Romans 12:2 "be transformed by the renewing of our minds." As your read with a hunger to understand, inviting the Holy Spirit into it, He will then lock in the truth to memory. By meditating on scripture, you let God reshape your thinking (because thoughts become your actions), tearing down old patterns, mindsets that were built from the past. Now you are building a new foundation in Christ now aligning our intentions with His. Hebrews 4:12 says “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
In any situation, the Holy Spirit will bring up scripture to redirect you. Yeild to Him in those moments and let Him transform you. This is how He grows you into the person He will calling you to be; shaping the way you walk with God everyday, molding your understanding, and equipping you to serve others with His heart. The Word gives you perspective when life feels confusing, comfort when you're hurting, and courage when challenges feel overwhelming.
Transformation only happens when we move beyond just hearing the truth but to actually living it. James 1:22 , "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."
Connect to the Body of Christ
You are not meant to walk this out alone. Scripture says, "Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together" Hebrews 10:24-25. We are meant to be a family; community is God's design. It keeps you encouraged, accountable, and growing.
That's why it's so important to find a Bible believing church or a fellowship group. How do you know its a Bible beliving church? It is you knowing the Bible yourself is so you aren't lead astray! Discipleship is essential. Without guidance, you can drift, misunderstand Scripture, or fall into patterns that weaken your walk. Being discipled helps you stay grounded, gives you wisdom from those who have gone before that are more seasoned, and shows you how to live your faith in everyday life outside of church walls.
Isolation makes you vulnerable, but fellowship makes you strong. When life gets heavy, the body of Christ lifts you up. When you're tempted to drift, they pull you back. The body of Christ is made up of many parts, each with a different role and talents, and we need each other's strengths. As Proverbs says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Accountability, encouragement, and unity help us grow together in faith, with one mind and one accord.
Serve Others. It's Not Just About You
Faith isn't meant to turn inward, it's meant to look outward. Jesus said, “for even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve” Mark 10:45.
God has given you gifts for a reason. Use them to bless others, whether that's volunteering at a church, helping a neighbor, or mentoring someone who needs guidance. Serving pulls you out of selfishness and builds humility, reminding you life is bigger than just your own comfort.
It also puts Christ's love on display. When you love others through your actions, they catch a glimpse of Jesus in you, and that kind of witness draws people to want to know Him. As you step out and serve, you'll find joy, growth, and even clarity about your God given purpose (1 Peter 4:10).
Don't Run from Hard Times. Grow Through Them
Don't be surprised when trials come up. That is a natural part of the Christian walk.“Consider it pure joy when you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance” James 1:2-4. What feels like a set back is often the very thing God is using to build strength in you.
The enemy may turn it up as you dedicate your life to Christ, but God uses those same pressures to shape your character. As Paul wrote, “We glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character hope” Romans 5:3-5.
Hardship is spiritual surgery. It exposes every hidden idol in your heart- things like control, approval, self-sufficiency etc. In Deuteronomy 8, God allowed the wilderness to humble Israel and test what was in their hearts. This was used as refinement. Real character shows up when obedience costs you something and even teaches you how to obey without needing emotional confirmation. Even Jesus learned obedience through what He suffered. Hebrews 5:8.
Pressure also sharpens your discernment. Hebrews 5:14 says "mature believers have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil." That kind of maturity does not come from comfort. It comes from pressure, mistakes, repentance, and learning to hear God when everything else is loud. When everything in life is going well, your prayer life can get lazy. But when you are desperate, you listen. Psalm 119:71 says, “It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn Your statutes.”
Suffering gives you authority you cannot borrow. 2 Corinthians 1 says "God comforts us in tribulation so we can comfort others with the same comfort we received." Your pain now becomes someone else’s survival manual. You don't even realize but that becomes a quiet confidence that comes from surviving with God. When fear loses its hold its because you've seen God carry you through what should have crushed you. What you gained is a spiritual muscle memory.
Through these trials, you come out with clearer priorities and faith that does not fold when feelings disappear. "In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us" Romans 8:37. So push forward and finish the race with the same determination Paul had: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have kept the faith" 2 Timothy 4:7.
Share the Gospel. Don't Keep It to Yourself
Jesus commanded “Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit. Teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always until the end of age” Matthew 28: 19-20. This is the mission for every believer.
You don't need to be a theologian to share your faith. Just tell people what God has done for you, how He pulled you out of sin, and how His grace has compleatly changed your life. That's your testimony. But for that testimony to have any real weight, your daily life actually backs up your words by being a living example first. Always remember, while your personal story encourages, it's the Gospel itself that holds the power to save (Romans 1:16). Use the "whole counsel" of God’s truth (Ephesians 4:15) speaking it in love. This means sharing the whole picture: we are all separated from God by sin (Romans 3:23), but because God loved us, He sent Jesus to die for those sins and rose again so that whoever believes and repents will have eternal life (John 3:16; Romans 10:9). True love doesn't hide what leads to destruction; it warns the ones it cherishes (Ezekiel 33:11).
Successful evangelism depends entirely on the ministry of the Holy Spirit who actively is moving within a person. When we rely on our own strength, our efforts can feel sometimes fruitless. But when the Holy Spirit leads, He goes before us to prepare the way, opening doors and turning ordinary conversations into divine appointments. Then you don't have to worry about finding the right words under pressure, "for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say" (Luke 12:12). This is exactly why Acts 1:8 instructs us to wait for the Spirit’s power to be His witnesses. Another helpful tool is whenever possible, go out with someone else. Jesus intentionally sent His disciples two by two (Mark 6:7). Having a partner in ministry brings shared wisdom, mutual protection, and deep encouragement when you begin to grow weary.
Be wise in how you approach:
Watch for open doors to slide the message in. Start with casual conversation and find ways to bring God into the picture, then build on that. Start with small truths. I don't suggest using complex Biblical wording too much, it could be hard for somone to grasp. Remember a baby starts with milk, not solid food. Once you gauge where someone is at, then bring it in deeper.
2 Timothy 2:15 says, “Be diligent to present yourselves a proof to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth". Know the Word for yourself so you can answer with confidence and kindness, not a fight. We aren't here to force doctrines or win debates. That kind of firm correction is meant for a different crowd, like people who say they are believers but are walking in a way that shows they haven't truly given themselves over to Christ. Those are the individuals you can rebuke in love and gentleness, holding them accountable to the faith they profess.
Discern when the Gospel isn't being received. If the message lands on closed ears, shake the dust off your feet and move on. We gave them the ability to at least choose. God’s got the next heart ready for you (Matthew 10:14).
Street ministry may not be for everyone, so don't force yourself to fit in a certain box that the Lord did not call you into. Again we all have many different roles of all kinds to play in telling people about Jesus (Ultimately everything we do should point back to Him). Examine your life and see the God given strengths that the Lord has placed in your heart to do. He will give your the grace, guidance and stratagies to make it happen. As the Word says in Psalm 127:1. "Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain". So don't get discouraged. We are just here to plant seeds. Even if it feels like nothing happened, that seed can grow beyond what we can see. Someone else may come by and water that seed, but God gives the increase (1 Corinthians 3:6-7). We don't save people; we lead them to the Savior and let the Holy Spirit do what only He can do which is change hearts. As you trust Him to that deeper work, always lead the gospel with genuine love, with active listening, and a true heart for the lost. Be the very example of compassion they need to see. Remember where you first came from; how you once longed for someone to care about you, and how you walked blind to sin before Christ revealed Himself to you. Condemning people by calling them bad or evil only puts a distaste for God in them rather than a real conviction to change. Focus instead on showing His deep love, and let the Holy Spirit do the heavy lifting.
Spiritual Warfare: Recognizing and Battling the Enemy
Warning! As you grow stronger in the Lord, expect backlash. Your adversary, the devil, “walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” 1 Peter 5:8. His goal is to steal, kill, and destroy, often through lies, doubt, and division. But you dont have to be afraid! You are victorious in Jesus if you remain in Him. Remember: “Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world” 1 John 4:4.
Recognize the attacks.
Not every struggle is natural. Sudden fear, confusion, or heavy temptations are often signals of a spiritual battle. When your identity in Christ feels under fire, pray immediately for wisdom (James 1:5). Recognizing the source of where the attack is coming from is the first step to winning the fight.
Put on Your Armor Daily
Paul outlines our defense in Ephesians 6. Truth is your belt, righteousness is your breastplate, and the Gospel of peace is your footwear. Use faith as your shield to extinguish fiery darts, and salvation as your helmet to protect your mind. Your only offensive weapon is the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” James 4:7. Keep your armor tight by confessing and forgiving quickly; unconfessed sin and bitterness are "footholds" the enemy uses to gain ground (Ephesians 4:27).
Deploy Your Weapons
Prayer & Worship: Prayer is your direct line to God, and worship shifts the atmosphere of a room (2 Chronicles 20:21-22).
Fasting: This draws you closer to God in total dependence and can bring breakthroughs where other things fail.
The Power of the Tongue: Declare God’s promises out loud. Speak truth and proclaim that “no weapon formed against you shall prosper” Isaiah 54:17. Use the name of Jesus to bind and cast away evil influences.
Fill the vacancy with God.
Do not leave your "house" empty. Invite the Holy Spirit to occupy every area: your thoughts (2 Corinthians 10:5), your desires, your speech (Ephesians 4:29), and your time (Colossians 3:16-17). What you fill your life with determines who rules it. If you are full of the Spirit, there isn't room for the enemy to return.
Stand firm and give thanks.
The battle has already been won at the cross! If the spiritual pressure becomes heavy, seek prayer and counsel from mature believers or spiritual leaders. Stay vigilant, in community and never be fearful. You are fighting from victory.
If the Fire Ever Starts to Fade
Think of it like this.. To examine isn't you finding reasons to feel guilty. It’s you being honest enough to say, "God, I’m empty and I don't even want to be here." Being real like that is the return.
If you’ve walked away and your heart isn't right, don't focus on how far you've gone. How much more discouraging would that be? Focus on how God handles you returning. You can't force yourself to feel something you don't feel, so quit trying to fix yourself before you come back. Just bring the it all to Him, just be there and sit with Him and ask Him to handle it because you can't.
Ezekiel 36:26 "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh."
When reading the Word feels dry, and prayers completely flat, don't pretend. Ask yourself hard questions, not to feel condemned but to clear the air. "Am I undercover angry? Do I actually want Him?" God already knows the answer, so saying it out loud just breaks the power over you.
2 Corinthians 13:5 "Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? Unless indeed you are disqualified?"
You don't need more strength to drop something; you just need to simply let go. Every weight or sin turns into spiritual numbness. Just stop homding on to them so you can breathe again.
Hebrews 12:1 "Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,"
Is your attitude completely cold? Cuz the relationship hasn't changed on His end. You aren't this stranger trying to break back in; you are a child coming home to a place that already belongs to you. He says He is married to you even in your backsliding.
Jeremiah 3:14 "Return, O backsliding children,” says the Lord; “for I am married to you. I will take you, one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion."
Stop waiting until you're serious or ready to come back. Time creates more distance. The moment you turn to Him, He heals the very thing that made you wander away.
Hosea 14:4 "I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely, for My anger has turned away from him."
Are you bored, frustrated, or don't even feel anything, tell Him. That is a valid prayer! Pouring out what you seriously been feeling is the fastest way to find a refuge.
Psalm 62:8 "Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us."
Faith feeling dead? Stop checking your own pulse and start checking His. Your standing with Him isn't based on your consistency; it’s based on His. He's waiting for you and won't leave you hanging! He cannot deny Himself.
2 Timothy 2:13 "If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself."
Ask Him to show you something new, then step out. Sometimes the fire only returns when you stop focusing on yourself and start putting your faith into action.
Psalm 119:18 "Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law."
James 2:17 "Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead."
Let go of every disappointment and get around people who are actually on fire for God. Ask for a fresh filling of the Spirit and praise like your life depends on it.
1 Peter 5:7 "casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you."
Acts 4:31 "And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness."
I know that was a lot! But take it one step at a time. The Holy Spirit will guide you personally, revealing more as you go. Everyones walk will look different but it will have the same goal.
You're not alone in this; "God's faithful to complete the good work He started in you" Philippians 1:6. Keep seeking Him, and watch your faith flourish. If you stumble, always get back up, but dont ever stay down unless you are looking toward Him in prayer. You've got this, because He's got you!
