The M.S Gripsholm was a Swedish cruise liner, repurposed as a repatriation ship during World War II from 1942-1946. The ship mainly carried those of Japanese and German citizenship to their home countries, stopping at several ports along the journey. The ship would depart from New York and make several stops on neutral territory, dropping off and letting on passengers trying to return to their home countries. Scholar Shizuo Kakutani was on the first of these voyages made by the M.S Gripsholm.
The Gripsholm's first exchange voyage went to the neutral port of Lorenco Marques, Mocambique, the second to Mormugao, Portugese India, both for prisoner of war exchanges and internees with Japan.
