From the Archive

Hideki Yukawa, Shizuo Kakutani, and Fumio Yagi, while all members at the Institute at the same time, or closely to the same time, had different experiences facing the war, racism, and discrimination.

Yukawa's archival record tell a story of a post-war America.

Kakutani's record show his journey to travel back to Japan via the M.S Gripsholm to escape internment and care for his elderly mother, awaiting for the war to end so that he could return to the IAS.

Yagi's records show his letters from the internment camp he lived in while he trained as a translator for the United States his documented difficulty finding employment in academia due to his race.
