Fumio Yagi came to the Institute for Advanced Study in 1943 after receiving his PhD in Mathematics from MIT the same year. After Yagi left IAS, he acted as a translator in the Military Intelligence Service from 1943-1946 while other members of his family were incarcerated at the Minidoka Idaho camp. While he came highly recommended by other mathematicians Yagi met at IAS, it was difficult for him to find employment due to the anti-Japanese racism that was still present in the United States. After his discharge from the army, he returned to University of Washington, his alma-mater, to work as an assistant professor. Yagi later worked in the aerospace industry, where he finished his career at Grumman Aerospace in New York.
