The 8th Maine Regiment Scholarship is a community-focused initiative offered by the 8th Maine Regiment Association, aimed at supporting local students on Peaks Island, Maine, as well as descendants of the 8th Maine Regiment. This scholarship reflects the Association’s ongoing commitment to education and community engagement, continuing the legacy of the 8th Maine Regiment in a meaningful way. The scholarship has recently been renamed to honor two dedicated members, Dave and Carol Knapp, founders of the scholarships. Two scholarships, valued at $500, shall be awarded each year to applicants, graduating seniors, who meet the requirements of the scholarship and receive approval of the scholarship committee.
The 8th Maine Regiment Association was founded in 1872 by veterans and their families. Today, their legacy lives on through the 8th Maine Oceanfront Lodge & Museum on Peaks Island, Maine, which preserves Civil War artifacts and documents related to the regiment, hosts community events, concerts, and educational programs, and offers lodging in a historic Queen Anne-style building from 1891. It’s a beautiful blend of history and hospitality!
