The 88th Fujihara Seminar:
Reconstruction of Earthquake Science
with Slow Earthquake
Reconstruction of Earthquake Science
with Slow Earthquake
Last updated on March 13, 2026
It has been a quarter-century since the discovery of slow earthquakes. As our understanding of these phenomena has deepened, it has become necessary to re-evaluate traditional earthquake science, which has historically centered on fast earthquakes. The Scientific Research projects, "Science of Slow Earthquakes" and "Science of Slow-to-Fast Earthquakes", which have promoted international research efforts for a decade, reached a significant ten-year milestone in 2026.
To mark this occasion, we are hosting a seminar for researchers who have been involved in this field to discuss the future perspectives of earthquake science. The seminar will focus on six key topics:
Physicochemical processes in slow-to-fast phenomena
Anatomy of Slow-to-Fast seismogenic zones
Slow-to-fast earthquakes through comparison across global subduction zones
Development of multi-scale observation techniques for monitoring Slow-to-Fast earthquakes
Data-driven discovery & monitoring of Slow-to-Fast earthquakes
Spatio-temporal multiscale modeling and forecast of slow and fast earthquakes
Through diverse discussions, we aim to explore the future directions of earthquake science over the next ten years.
