Horoman Peridotite & Mt. Apoi Geopark, Hidaka, Hokkaido 

🧭 Field Trip Overview

A one-day field trip to the Horoman Peridotite and Mt. Apoi Geopark will be conducted the day after the seminar. The Horoman peridotite massif is one of the world's best-studied exposures of upper-mantle rock, offering a rare opportunity to observe mantle petrology and structure in the field. Mt. Apoi Geopark, a UNESCO Global Geopark, hosts these outcrops together with a visitor center introducing the local geology and ecology.  

📋 Important Details

• Meeting Point: 7:50 AM, September 19 (Saturday), at the entrance of Grand Hotel New Oji (the seminar venue).

• Departure / Return: Bus departs at 8:00 AM and returns to the hotel around 7:00 PM.

• Transportation: Two chartered buses (round trip).

• Capacity: TBD

• Participation Fee: Free of charge (lunch and drinks are not included; please bring your own ).

• Guide: Kazuki Matsuyama (Nagoya University)

• Field Gear: Outdoor walking is involved at several stops, including a riverside. Comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended.

• The itinerary may be adjusted, or some stops skipped, depending on weather and time.

• Please take your trash back with you.

• We will cancel the trip in case of heavy rain.

🗓️ Itinerary

• 8:00 — Depart Grand Hotel New Oji

• 9:30–9:45 — Rest stop: Michi-no-Eki Thoroughbred Road Niikappu

• 11:15–12:00 — Stop 1: Peridotite Plaza (in front of Samani Town Hall)

• 12:15–12:45 — Stop 2: Lunch near Mt. Apoi Geopark Visitor Center

• 12:45–13:30 — Mt. Apoi Geopark Visitor Center tour

• 13:45–14:45 — Stop 3: Horoman River mouth (pebble collecting)

• 15:00–15:45 — Stop 4: Enrumu Cape Viewpoint (optional, subject to schedule)

• 17:15–17:30 — Rest stop: Michi-no-Eki Thoroughbred Road Niikappu

• 19:00 — Arrive back at Grand Hotel New Oji
