6th grade place-based lessons
In 6th Grade, students are ready to move from learning about Alaska Day perspectives to acting on them. In earlier grades, students learned about community and belonging, Lingít presence before colonization, and change over time. They also looked at the 1867 transfer through Lingít, Russian, and American eyes, and proposed more inclusive ways to celebrate. In this lesson, students use real photos of Sitka's Alaska Day and Reconciliation Day events to ask who is represented and who is missing. Then they design a parade contribution for a real community audience and judge it with criteria they write themselves. This fits the middle school focus on identity, systems, and multiple perspectives, and asks students to see themselves as community members who can shape how Sitka remembers its history.

Photos 4, 5, 12, 13, and 25 show the Kiks.ádi mourning ceremony and Reconciliation Day. Plan how you'll frame these respectfully. They aren't parade "entries," and students should understand what they are before discussing them.
