Culturally Embedded Lessons for ELA, Social Studies, Science, and Math Alaska Standards
Between August and September, students are building community within their own classroom. These lessons are designed to create a classroom community using local cultural knowledge.
These lessons can be taught independently of each other or in combination. Use this as a resource to enhance student understanding of Alaska Day here in Sitka. These lessons build off of what students learn in the previous grades and prepares them for what they may learn in the next grades.
Raven Writes Lessons were created by Sealaska Heritage Institute. These lessons are specific to the Juneau area, but with coordination with the cultural department they can be adapted for Sitka.
A long lasting 5th grade unit comes to life with this unit that brings a connection and understanding to the importance of copper in this area.
Students have learned all about herring in the lower grades. These lessons explore herring through a lens that asks questions about the impact on our community and its people.
During a time when we commonly talk about civil rights and Elizabeth Peratrovich´s involvement, these lessons take students thinking deeper to learn about all of the individuals who were a part of getting us where we are today.
