It was Code Red in 5th grade this week as students were called to don gloves and masks and report to the Operating Rooms as lives were on the line. After reviewing case files and procedures, our new surgeons used their newly acquired knowledge of Order of Operations to successfully save all patients. It was quite impressive!
Surgeries aside, we also spent a good deal of time on multi-step word problems this week. It is important to note that word problems in 5th grade math are quite challenging and typically not mastered until 3rd trimester. Know that we will be spending time throughout the year on these and it is ok if students don't grasp them right away. We also added an extra day of practice for this first round and moved the test to Monday (9/29).
The other big highlight this week was the planting of strawberry and basil seeds. They will sprout initially in mini greenhouses and then be moved into the hydroponic towers. Pretty cool start, to say the least.
