NHS Hosts 5th Annual 5K Family Run/Walk for Foster Kids
Sterling Heights, May 16—Macomb County alone hosts over 1,500 children in foster care each year. Starting in Macomb County, but now growing to service Oakland County and beyond, Friends of Foster Kids is a 501(c)(3) non-profit working directly with the Department of Health and Human Services using a network of volunteer Angels to fill gaps of need for children removed from homes due to abuse and neglect and placed in temporary housing or shelters. Friends of Foster Kids (FoFK) focuses services and programs on five C’s: Christmas, Care, College, Careers, and Coalition of Community Commitment.
The Philip S. Killoran Chapter of the National Honor Society at Sterling Heights High School is partnering with FoFK to host a 5K Family Run/Walk to help raise funds for the local nonprofit.
Our vision is to build community through an outdoor event emphasizing fitness and fun while creating awareness about foster kids. The 5K race is professionally timed with medals offered for overall and the top three in each competitive bracket. Race brackets range from 10 & under up to 70+. The chapter encourages school-aged children to participate as well as athletes by offering a 13 & under bracket and an MHSAA bracket (14–18), awarding a plaque to the school with the most participants in the race. The Run/Walk is geared toward the inclusion of families of all age ranges, abilities, and numbers. Strollers are welcome. Please keep pets at home. All participants will receive a participation ribbon.
It is a fun, family event, a door prize drawing, face painting, lawn games, spring craft, and a “Flower Power” costume opportunity encouraging runners and walkers to dress in colorful, flower-themed outfits or costumes—think florals, prints, and petals—for a chance to win a prize, with best costume awarded. Donations of new school supplies and/or full-sized hygiene items are always accepted. Donors will receive extra door prize tickets.
Registration and payment for the event will be held online through Eastside Racing and RunSignup.com. A QR code linking the event website can be found on the flyer. Early Bird registration opened February 1 and continues until April 26 for $25. Pre-registration begins April 27 and continues until May 15 with an increase to $30. Participants may register on race day for $35. Children under 4 are free. All registered participants will receive an event packet the day of the event including a T-shirt, number bib with electronic chip timing, and a door prize ticket. Event day check-in begins at 8:30 AM with the official 5K Race for Foster Kids starting at 10:00 AM. Drawings begin at 10:30 AM with an awards ceremony at 11:00 AM.
Our goal is to raise over $10,000. Event organization and implementation will happen through the hard work of many volunteers and with the support of monetary sponsors and in-kind donations. Community members who would like to partner with us may contact the chapter via email at shhs.psk.nhs@gmail.com or phone at 586-825-2700 x14217. Please put “5K” in the subject line or mention “5K” in the voicemail.
