5g revolution

Welcome to the 5G Revolution OER

Welcome to this open education resource (OER) where we hope you will enjoy diving into the subject of 5G technology and envisioning the opportunities and challenges it will bring to the world and to mobile and open education in particular. You can learn about the creators of the OER by scrolling down on this page.

We invite you to jump onboard this learning and collaborating journey to the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) that 5G will bring us. As you travel in the different sections of this OER, you will have opportunities to be part of the conversation by participating in a few activities and by posting your comments and reflections in the comment sections.

This OER is all about the 5G Revolution. It begins with an overview of what 5G is. The focus then narrows to 5G and the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), how 5G will affect industries and individual lives, the Digital Divide, and concludes with an opportunity for you to consider its impact on education. There are collections of videos throughout, along with written information, and questions and activities to help you engage with the content.

Invitation to Use this OER

This OER was created for use in the University of British Columbia's Master of Educational Technology program course on Mobile and Open Learning, ETEC 523. Though it has been created for a Canadian context, we believe it is for anyone who is looking to learn more about 5G and how it may impact their lives as well as others. This new technology allows for innovation across many industry sectors, including education.

We hope that this resource will allow you to learn about these innovations and potentially spark some new ideas, as well. If you are an educator and wish to teach from this OER, we invite you to do so by using the following framework of the 5Rs of OER, as seen in the graphic below. Throughout the OER we have added suggestions for how to replace some activities for use in your context but have kept our colleagues' valuable contributions to enhance your learning or teaching experience.

Retain: keep forever. Reuse: use for your own purposes. Revise: adapt or modify. Remix: combine with other resources. Redistribute: share with others.

If you wish to learn more about OERs (from OERs!), there is an Open Educational Resources Awareness Course from Grande Prairie Regional College in Alberta, and Chapter 10 from Tony Bates' Teaching in a Digital Age is an excellent introduction.
