Overview:
Software Name & Developer:
iMovie 10.3 is developed by Apple Inc.
Purpose:
iMovie 10.3 is a user-friendly video editing software designed for macOS and iOS devices. It allows users to create and edit high-quality videos with transitions, music, voiceovers, and more.
Educational Use:
iMovie is ideal for classroom use due to its simplicity and robust editing tools. It encourages student creativity, supports digital storytelling, and enhances project-based learning.
Teachers can also use iMovie in your classroom! You can record a mini-lecture, adding primary sources, images that are essential to your lesson, and even background music to make the video engaging. Teachers can also use the voiceover feature like students to explain key concepts and add text to highlight ideas, vocabulary, or essential questions. This tool is helpful in flipped classrooms, asynchronous learning, or even leaving sub plans!
Example:
A history teacher could assign a "Biography Documentary" project to the class. The students would be required to research a historical figure (Ex. Abraham Lincoln, George Washington) and then use the tech tool iMovie to create a short documentary.
Students would:
Gather and organize images, primary sources, and practice voiceover narration
Use iMovie's templates to build a timeline
Export the video submit the assignment, and present the final video to the class
The assignment paired with iMovie allows for educational tools such as research, storytelling by narration, media literacy, and presentation skills.
Software Compatibility:
This tech tool integrates seamlessly with other Apple applications, such as Apple Photos, GarageBand, and iCloud, all of which facilitate easy media sharing and editing.
Recommended Age Group:
This program is best suited for largely anyone who is able to use technology effectively. It is recommended to begin with middle school and up, however, students are becoming more adaptable with technology in the classroom and with supervision and guidance- younger students could use iMovie efficiently as well.
Features:
Intuitive Interface & Drag-and-Drop Editing:
iMovie stands out for its easy-to-navigate interface, or home page, which allows students and users to drag and drop video clips, audio, and titles, and choose transitions directly into a project. Beginners and students just learning iMovie, can quickly create polished videos without a large amount of assistance.
Example: A student can import clips from a school event and use the drag-and-drop editing tool to create a highlight reel.

Built-In Templates & Modes:
According to commonsense.org, there are different modes to be able to edit on iMovie. The program is an ideal introductory editing tool for classrooms that use iPads or Macs. iMovie supports project-based learning, as well as builds students' digital storytelling skills and even collaboration skills.
Younger, or more inexperienced students can begin with Magic Movie mode, which automatically creates movies from selected videos and pictures. Students may take pictures of different shapes or books that are related to a theme, and then allow Magic Mode to put it all together including music and transitions.
There is also Storyboard mode, commonsense.org discusses how this program on iMovie includes templates for popular formats such as book reports, news reports, scientific experiments, and movie trailers. Each storyboard gives descriptions of each shot of the template and can introduce students to common video production terms like "reference shot," "wide shot" and more.

Cost Considerations:
While iMovie itself is free, it is important to also note that it is exclusive to Apple products only. This means that to use iMovie, users must have access to compatible Apple hardware, such as Mac, iPhone, or iPad. For teachers or classrooms that do not have Apple products, iMovie may not be a functional choice.
There is not a separate "educational version" of iMovie. However, Apple provides the full version of iMovie free to all Apple users- so if schools that already use Apple products (MacBooks, iPads, or iPhones) can install iMovie on all devices at no cost!
Personal Use of the Program:
I have personally used iMovie on Mac, iPhone, and iPad to create a variety of projects. My projects include a personal movie from my 8th grade tech class- using videos, slideshows, transitions, and music. I have also used it to create yearly recaps of some of my favorite memories in college, as well as creating my volleyball recruiting video to send to college coaches. I would say that iMovie's interface is clean, user friendly, and simple even for beginners. I used the drag-and-drop feature, media library, transitions, titles, and music to create my video.
I typically have used the "movie" template to create my personal movies. Being able to use the touch screen on my iPad to be able to have accessibility to create effectively was awesome! I am able to add all of my fun videos, volleyball videos and more.
