Predatory journals

Task

The task

What does it mean to be a predatory journal?

Your task is to go through each step of the Process and use the resources provided to you, as well as additional resources you locate on your own, to become an expert on predatory journals and predatory publishing.

You will need to identify how predatory publishing works, its key characteristics, how to evaluate predatory versus legitimate journals, and give recommendations for how future researchers can use the information you've discovered to determine whether a new-to-them journal is predatory or not.

Your research will culminate in a presentation of your findings and recommendations to your colleagues about where and how to publish their scholarly work and avoid predatory journals. Your presentation can be in the form of a PowerPoint presentation, an infographic, a Prezi, or something similar.

You will have three deliverables to complete:

  1. A PowerPoint presentation, infographic, Prezi, or something similar.
  2. A short presentation to your colleagues where you briefly walk them through your research and the graphic presentation you have created.
  3. A short reflection/proof of concept where you will select three journals from a provided list and use the criteria from your presentation to determine whether or not each of those three journals should be considered predatory. You will need to provide written explanation and justification for your choices.
