Cello

The cello or violoncello has the most expansive range of the string family, from deep bass tones right through to soprano notes. Much bigger than violins and violas, cellos are played upright, and the cellist is usually seated.

Due to their beautiful sound, cellos are wonderful solo instruments and there are many famous cello pieces such as Bach's Cello Suites and Saint-Saëns' The Swan. In string quartets, ensembles and orchestras, cellos provide depth, texture and harmony in the bass range. While less common in folk music than their smaller cousins, cellos have carved out a significant presence in the pop and rock music space thanks to the likes of 2Cellos, the Piano Guys and Netflix's Wednesday.

Sizing

4Strings has a range of cello sizes from 1/8 to full size (4/4).

Having the right size cello is important. While it's best to consult your cello teacher about the best size cello for you, where that is not possible, the sizing chart below will give a good indication. If you're borderline between two sizes, it is generally best to opt for the smaller size.
