Founded in 1921, Department of Zoology, Banaras Hindu University, is a leading department of animal sciences in the country. In the 1960s, it had taken the edge in introducing newer disciplines like Genetics, Ecology, Endocrinology, Biochemistry, and Evolution into the Zoology curriculum of undergraduate and postgraduate levels and had thus, helped to develop the understanding of Zoology as a vibrant growing science. Faculty members in the department are engaged in high-quality research in diverse areas such as physiology and molecular biology of aging, hormonal control of reproduction and body-rhythms, insect and fish physiology, genetic and chromosomal evolution, human genetics, gene expression, and developmental biology. The department has well-equipped teaching and research laboratories that are supported through grants to individual Faculty, and special funding from UGC (COSIST, Centre of Advanced Studies) and DST (FIST).
The academic contributions of the Faculty have been recognized through various honors and awards, such as Padma Shri, SS Bhatnagar Prize, Jawaharlal Nehru Award, FICCI Award, Hari Om Trust Award, Vigyan Ratna, and Fellowships of prestigious National and International science and medical Academies. The Faculty members have served on editorial boards of various journals in their domains of expertise and have been members of National and International decision-making bodies that formulate general policy/plans on research and education.
The Department of Zoology, now serving as the Headquarters of ISCB, organized the 1st All India Cell Biology Conference in 1977, immediately after the Indian Society of Cell Biology was established. Since then, this department has hosted the AICBCs again in 1993 and 2007.

The Indian Society of Cell Biology (ISCB) was established in 1976 as a national forum to promote cell biology research in India. The society aims to promote the confluence of areas like cell structure & function, immunology, microbiology, genetics, chromosome biology, taxonomy, developmental biology, biochemistry, and physiology. The ISCB has been a member of the International Federation of Cell Biology since 1978; it is also a member of the Asia Pacific Organization for Cell Biology.
Since its inception, the ISCB has regularly organized its annual three-day All India Cell Biology Conferences (AICBC). These three days of cell biology conferences provide remarkable opportunities where peers meet to exchange ideas, develop collaborations and enjoy the academic feast.
Activities of the Society
Biannual Cell Biology Newsletters
The society publishes biannual Newsletters. The Special Issue of the Newsletter (September 2020 Volume 30, Number 1) had Protocols on Cell Biology Experiments. The issue is used as a protocol book in various University departments and colleges for undergraduate and post-graduate classroom teaching.
