Essential Question - How can different fractions name the same part of the whole?
In this lesson, you will understand that the same fractional amount can be represented by many different fractions that equal the same amount.
Learn:
Watch this Brain Pop Jr. video about equivalent fractions.
Here are some of the models we use to help us find equivalent fractions.
These are called Fraction Tiles. They model different fractions using bars.
These are called Fraction Circles. They are also models of different fractions using circles.
Different fractions can name the same part of the whole. Fractions that name the same part of the whole are called equivalent fractions.
Here is a model of a fraction circle.
When you are looking at the same whole, you can find equivalent fractions.
1/3 = 2/6
1/3 = 4/12
2/6 = 4/12
All three fractions are equivalent.
They are all the same size.
Here is a model of fraction tiles.
1/2 = 2/4
1/2 = 3/6
2/4 = 3/6
All three fractions are equivalent.
They are all the same size and amount.
Practice:
In the space below, you can use the fraction tile tool (rectangle with the plus sign) or fraction circle tool (circle with the plus sign) to create equivalent fractions. See if you can use the tool to create equivalent fractions for 1/2, 3/4, 2/3, 2/8, and 5/10.
Directions:
1. First click on the fraction tile or circle tool and click on the number of parts you want to break it into. Then click the ok button.
2. Use the color bars to shade in the the fraction you want.
3. Then click the fraction tile or circle tool again to create a second fraction example. Click on the number of parts you want to break the new fraction into. (Hint, it should be a different denominator than the first.) Then click the ok button again.
4. Shade in the second fraction using the color bars. If your colored parts are shaded in the same amount, then you have created an equivalent fraction.
5. Lastly, when you want to clear your workspace, click on the two arrows that form a circle. Try to make another equivalent fraction.
