3rd grade place-based unit
In the Spring, Sitka Sound Science Center offers a 3rd grade volcano lesson focused on the science of L’úx/Mt Edgecumbe. This SNEP in Schools unit is designed to augment and complement the SSSC SIS program by highlighting Lingít knowledge, traditions, practices, and values as they relate to L'úx Shaa/Mt. Edgecumbe volcano
LESSON 1
Print or project the oral history text.
Prepare the KWL chart (poster or digital).
Set up space for tableau (clear floor area).
Review pronunciation of key Lingít words.
Gather images of L’úx Shaa, Kruzof, ocean, canoes.
Cue audio/video clips if your version includes them.
Preview teacher background knowledge section.
LESSON 2
Print placename maps for each student or small group.
Prepare a large map for modeling (projector or chart).
Ensure placename pronunciation audio is ready (if using).
Gather sticky notes or labels for map practice.
Review the Teacher Note on connecting naming to identity.
LESSON 3 and 4
Coordinate with Scientists in the Schools schedule.
Prep student notebooks or recording sheets.
Preview rock vocabulary and any safety notes.
LESSON 5
Print story pages or projection-ready slides.
Prepare nature‑connect items (e.g., photos, shells, cedar bough).
Set up materials for reflection: journals, pencils, crayons.
Review Teacher Note on connecting offerings to modern life.
Optional: gather traditional food visuals (herring eggs, ooligan, berries).
LESSON 6
Prepare canoe‑building videos or photo sequences.
Print canoe notetaker sheets.
Gather building materials for mini‑canoe model OR STEM extension (optional).
Review Teacher Note on teamwork, observation, and engineering.
Ready any local canoe photos from Sitka, STA, or SHI
LESSON 7
Gather natural pigment images (celadonite, ochre) or samples if available.
Print coloring sheets or formline‑inspired outlines.
Prepare watercolor or colored pencil materials.
Set up I Saw / I Thought anchor chart.
Review background info on celadonite + volcanic minerals.
Optional: prepare a mini “color experiment” station for students.
To accompany the unit, students can use the student notebook to capture their learning as you work through each lesson.
