3-D Sculptures
Sculpture Making LESSON OUTLINE:
MAKING THE ARMATURE
Lesson 1 - Making the armature of the sculpture with newspapers, recycled materials and masking tape.
Lesson 2 - Finish making the armature.
Use one sheet to make each petal. Make 5 same size and shape petals.
Make centre of flower with 2 sheets for added volume and height.
Attach 5 petals to centre sphere.
TIPS:
Don't tear the newspapers. Use one sheet per petal so that you can make each petal the same size more easily.
Self-assess how fast and well you can make the first round shaped petal. If it's easy for you, challenge yourself to make a different shape. Remember you have to repeat making each petal similarly to match. You must finish the entire armature by the end of lesson 2.
Not happy with the form you made? Too small? Too round? Unravel the newspaper, adjust the form, then apply tape to hold it.
Finish all the parts of the flower before attaching them so that you can make adjustments to the form in case there are gaps etc.
The tape can change the form of your newspaper shape if you apply too much pressure.
No need to ask the teachers "Is this good enough?" YOU are the designer and you can decide if the armature is good enough! Have high standards for yourself. Fix it till it's good enough. Do your best! Challenge yourself. Have fun!
MAKING AND APPLYING PULP
Lesson 3 - Make and apply paper pulp with toilet paper and glue. Apply thin base layer on side without relief design.
Lesson 4 - Apply paper pulp on the front display side. Add relief details.
Watch the video and learn how to make paper pulp. Unroll toilet paper roll into the glue mix and massage paper into pulp form.
Check if pulp is too watery or too dry. Form a ball in your hand. See if it stays in form.
Apply thin layer of pulp to base of sculpture.
Cover the sides and front of your sculpture in as thin a layer as possible.
Cover only one side so that you can leave it the other side on a surface to dry.
Close the lid tightly to keep your pulp for the next lesson. Leave your wet paper pulp sculpture on top of your container to dry.
PAINTING WITH ACRYLIC
Lesson 5 - Paint front and side of sculpture.
Lesson 6 - Paint the rest of the sculpture.
Watch the videos colours. Paint the front of your sculpture. Keep in mind it has to be placed down on one side to dry.
Paint the side and back of your sculpture.
Do final painting touch-ups. Make sure there is no surface left unpainted. Dot in any white areas with paint.
