30TH ASIAN ECONOMIC
SYMPOSIUM 2021
Building Resilient Societies in Asia
November 5, 2021
The unprecedented effects of the natural and man-made disasters have engulfed almost the entire world causing widespread economic, social and environmental loss. The Lehman shock occurred in 2008, and the tragedy of the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred in 2011. Climate change threatens people with many challenges including food insecurity, water scarcity, flooding, and extreme heat. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a dramatic loss of human life and presents an unprecedented challenge to public health, food systems and the world of work. These tragedies have global impact, but their prevention and preparedness must be local. We live in Asia, need a dramatic shift in the approach and preparedness to these disasters. It is against this background, this AES will create a scholarly discussion on how to manage disasters to minimize their economic, social and environmental impacts through adopting various strategies and policy interventions.
