There is 2 basic "generations" of the TRX300 Fourtrax. Although some will argue that there is actually three. On this page I will briefly explain the 2 generations and there major differences.

2wd models used strut style front end
Different Cam/CDI produced 18.5hp (1988 only) 16.5hp '89 +
Monotube upper frame rail, air intake goes through this, gas tank straddles it.
Rear hubs and axle have shorter splines, prone to wear.
Exhaust header has large droop in it near front of cylinder

Smooth fender flares held on by screws 1988-1991, push pins in 1992.

Longer Splines on rear hubs/axle
Smooth Fender Flares 1993-1995
Ribbed fender flares 1996-2000
2wd models have double A-arm front suspension similar to 4wd models
Shorter front driveshaft than 1st gen models
Gen 2.5? 3? '98-2000
Different wiring harness and CDI (Single plug vs. 2 plug) also "alarm" box is part of CDI not separate box.
New colour, "Patriot Red"
No other significant changes from 2nd gen 1993-1997 models.
NOTES:
Model Generation Overlap - Some 1993 models may be Gen1 machines there was some overlap in 1993 between Gen1 and Gen2 models.
Model Generation Interchange - Some parts WILL interchange and some parts WILL NOT interchange. I cannot list everything that is up to you to find out, which is easy enough on most online parts websites.
