TRX300 Generations
There is 2 basic "generations" of the TRX300 Fourtrax. Although some will argue that there is actually three. On this page I will briefly explain the 2 generations and there major differences.
1st Gen 1988-1992
1st Gen 1988-1992
- 2wd models used strut style front end
- Different Cam/CDI produced 18.5hp (1988 only) 16.5hp '89 +
- Monotube upper frame rail, air intake goes through this, gas tank straddles it.
- Rear hubs and axle have shorter splines, prone to wear.
- Exhaust header has large droop in it near front of cylinder
- 88-91 wheels slightly different design
- Smooth fender flares held on by screws 1988-1991, push pins in 1992.
2ND Gen 1993-1997
2ND Gen 1993-1997
- Double tube top frame rail.
- Longer Splines on rear hubs/axle
- Smooth Fender Flares 1993-1995
- Ribbed fender flares 1996-2000
- 2wd models have double A-arm front suspension similar to 4wd models
- Shorter front driveshaft than 1st gen models
Gen 2.5? 3? '98-2000
Gen 2.5? 3? '98-2000
- Different wiring harness and CDI (Single plug vs. 2 plug) also "alarm" box is part of CDI not separate box.
- New colour, "Patriot Red"
- No other significant changes from 2nd gen 1993-1997 models.

- Model Generation Overlap - Some 1993 models may be Gen1 machines there was some overlap in 1993 between Gen1 and Gen2 models.
- Model Generation Interchange - Some parts WILL interchange and some parts WILL NOT interchange. I cannot list everything that is up to you to find out, which is easy enough on most online parts websites.
