Unit Overview

Connect with the Cultural Department to schedule times to make regalia and the culmination event.

LESSON 1

1. Prepare the Student Notebooks. Each student will need one copy. These are to be printed landscape, double sided, then fold in half and staple book style.  ​

2. Prepare two large poster boards, or one large poster board split down the middle vertically. On one side of the board, write the prompt, “What is Community?”. On the other side write the prompt, “Where is Community?”. These will be filled in with notes during the whole group discussion and will act as anchor charts throughout the lesson and unit. ​

3. Preview the teacher PowerPoint presentation for Lesson 1. 

4. Read all information in Lesson 1's Build Background Knowledge section. ​

5. Gather the extension book(s) if you would like to use these during snack-time before or after the lesson.​

LESSON 2

6. Prepare the book "Tlingit Indians" by Suzanne Morgan Williams.There should be a copy in the school library, if not, please reachout to the Cultural Department. 

7. Preview the Teacher PowerPoint presentation for Lesson 2.

8. Ensure that audio used on the slides are functioning correctly. (Practice saying these terms)​

9. Read all information in Lesson 2's Teacher Background Knowledge section.​

LESSON 3

10. Read all information in Lesson 3's Build Background Knowledge section. ​​

11. Gather the extension book(s) if you would like to use these during snack-time before or after the lesson.​​

LESSON 5

12. Gather the book "How Devil's Club Came to Be" by Miranda Rose Worl.

LESSON 6

13. Schedule the 2nd Grade ACT Kit: Regalia for Celebration (Coloring) for Lesson 6B. 

14. Gather the dance bib supply bags from the 2nd Grade ACT Kit: Regalia for Celebration (Drawing). Each student will need one bag.  ​

15. Regalia for Celebration (Drawing). Decide at which point you willstop the video (Slide 16) to take a break between Sessions 1 & 2.​

16. Gather dry erase boards and markers if planning on using themfor student practice. ​

17. Decide if you will use any of the Formline Practice pages in the ACT Kit pre- or post-session.​
