HAA DUSEÉIGUX SITEE YAAW | Herring is Life
2nd grade place-based unit
In the spring, Sitka and other parts of Southeast Alaska witness the great return of the herring. This vibrant season is marked by the simultaneous spawning and harvesting of herring—a time of abundance and cultural significance. In this lesson, students explore the life cycle and importance of herring while making meaningful connections to English Language Arts and math standards.
LESSON 1
Schedule with Mr. Charlie Skultka or another cultural specialist to demonstrate cooking herring in a bentwood box using volcanic rocks by the beginning of March
Print slide 54 copies for students
Gather a large bucher paper or designate a spot where students can create a yaaw habitat mural together
LESSON 2
Optional: gather physical items of a herring, herring eggs, hemlock branch, or other items related to herring season for students to feel, explore, and observe
LESSON 3
Print off the bingo pages slide 55 and teacher copy on slide 56
Gather papers and pencils for the drawing video
