Culturally Embedded Lessons for ELA, Social Studies, Science, and Math Alaska Standards
August through November, students are building community in their classroom and learning about what makes Sitka a community. This unit provides a culturally appropriate approach to teaching about communities we find in Sitka.
These lessons can be taught independently of each other or in combination. Use this as a resource to enhance student understanding of Alaska Day here in Sitka. These lessons build off of what students learn in the previous grades and prepares them for what they may learn in the next grades.
In the spring time, Sitka and other parts of Southeast Alaska experience the great herring return. During this time, there is spawn and harvesting happening all at once. This lesson takes students on journey of learning all about herring while connecting to ELA and math standards.
Raven Writes Lessons were created by Sealaska Heritage Institute. These lessons are specific to the Juneau area, but with coordination with the cultural department they can be adapted for Sitka.
