The "Edifici Mondo" complex
The complex, a "sacred village" made up of four convents close together, known to most as the "complex of former prisons", is located in the east side of "Plaium Montis", covering a total area of 18,000 square meters. Consists of three convents and a noble palace: Convent of San Pietro a Maiella and San Giacomo, founded in 1332 to house the celestine order. Convent of San Francesco d'Assisi, founded in 1222 and renovated by the will of Queen Margherita of Durazzo in 1409. Monastery of Santa Maria della Consolazione, founded in 1559. Palazzo San Massimo, built during 800 AD by the will of Guaiferio of Salerno to use it as the residence of the princes of Salerno.
The international competition for ideas for the recovery of the Sant'Antonio complex was announced by the Piano Office of the Municipality of Salerno in September 1997 and ended two years later. Bernardo Secchi was proclaimed president of the organizing committee and of the jury, who defined the complex as "World Buildings": a world in terms of size and complexity. The main objective of the competition was to rebuild ties with the city. However, the executive planning and short-term recovery interventions were not followed by the competition phase, as no necessary sources of financing were found.
