Educators require hard and soft skills to ensure good student engagement and learning. Developing and refining educator skills may prove challenging, but this continuous improvement can benefit one's performance and that of their students, two inherently linked elements.
This SSC provides opportunities that may assist students with their reflection and allow both experienced and novel educators to further develop their teaching skills.

The GREAT programme offers GP Educators interactive educator development sessions alongside your peer educators whilst teaching students. We role-model a student-centred interactive approach to the workshops drawing on your learning and educator experiences. We will share ideas and experiences of educating students, try new things out, reflect together on what works, and what can be improved and engage the pedagogical literature. We encourage Near-Peer SSC students to join any of our six sessions.
The programme runs from December to April.
There are six three-hours interactive virtual workshops and an one and a half hour introductory session which draw upon educational theory and practice.
This course draws on design-based methods, creative enquiry, systems thinking, virtual whiteboards and more.
The programme is led by Dr Louise Younie and Dr Rofique Ali.

INTRODUCTION TO TEACHING (formally NESTT)- This training is open to GPs in the North East London area who are new to undergraduate teaching or those who would just like an opportunity to refresh their knowledge. It will provide attendees with basic skills to prepare students in the community, covering: What makes a great teacher, Creating a great feedback environment and Induction planning.
This course is aimed at new GP tutors as an introduction to teaching in primary care but is very relevant for students interested in a career in medical education.
Training doctors of tomorrow is vital to the future of patient care. We believe that our clinical educators matter, our students matter and relationships matter.
The literature affirms that the human dimension of teaching is central to student wellbeing, engagement, and patient care (you will hear more about this on the course).
Our three-session programme therefore engages both in the relational as well as the knowledge and skills-based dimensions of education.

How do we build self-compassion and compassion for others?
How do we manage ‘difficult’ students and situations?

GP EDUCATOR WORKSHOPS (formally NUGGETS) monthly sessions (first Wednesday of month, 1 hour, 13:00 - 14:00). The sessions will be very interactive sharing in small and large groups. Each month will have a theme and a practical focus.
