Barts and London SMD Near-Peer Student Selected Component
Welcome to the Medical Educator and Clinical Development in Primary Care student-selected component (SSC), which aims to facilitate Near-Peer educator development in a Primary Care setting.
We have created this module to encourage students to develop their skills as educators and mentors through teaching and supporting younger year students who are undertaking a Community Based Medical Education (CBME) placement. Students will also have the opportunity to design teaching sessions and materials and apply for QMUL SEED, an educator development award. We hope to improve students’ knowledge of teaching methods and their ability to provide feedback to learners.

Timetable and Activities
This 4-week module has six rotations throughout the academic year. Based on your group, you will be allocated one of these rotations.
The module lead will contact students before the start of this module with further details and with an invitation to an introductory meeting to discuss the timetable.
Assessment and prior work
Assessment and prior work
Students will be assessed on a (1) 1500-word reflection and (2) creative enquiry piece. The completion of both elements is mandatory.
You are also expected to create a (3) Teaching Portfolio evidencing the work you have undertaken during this module.

This SSC provides several resources and opportunities that may assist students with their reflections and enable both experienced and new educators to develop their teaching skills. Examples of oppertunities include attending post-graduate workshops and training, such as GREAT and Introduction to Teaching

SEED AWARD
SEED stands for Student Enhanced Engagement and Development. The SEED Award recognises students’ contributions and aims to encourage the development of new opportunities for all our students to engage with educational development across Queen Mary.
