China, the world's oldest literary culture, has handed down such classics as Confucian's The Analects, the fantastical Journey to the West, and the lyric poetry of Li Bai and Du Fu. Japan's The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu is quite rightly regarded as the world's first novel, a window into the life and feelings of an imperial court. Contemporary Japanese fiction, with writers such as Haruki Murakami, combines the surreal with the intensely personal. In Korea, poetry such as sijo helped develop storytelling traditions, and present-day writers such as Han Kang continue to address issues of trauma and healing.
