It's time! This year's summer learning theme is "Unearth a Story!" So, let's dig into a good book, uncover hidden histories, explore the past, and go on a great adventure together! Learn more about summer learning, see our special guest Dominic Bianco from the Jurrasic Alcove in South Park, and get excited with us at our kick-off event where prehistoric fun will abound.

Thursdays, June 4th - 25th at 4 p.m.
For grades 2-5
Participate in friendly matches to build confidence and experience. This club is for kids who already know how to play the game. No instruction will be given. Members of our Teen Advisory Board and the High School Chess Club will supervise.
Register for each session separately beginning June 1st.

For grades K-2 with a caregiver
What kind of birds dwell around here? Which have you seen in your backyard? Have you ever noticed a wren? Join us to learn a bit more about birds and then build a birdhouse, perfectly sized for a wren. All supplies provided. Adult supervision/assistance is required.
Register for one session only beginning on the first of the respective month.

Do you like to draw? Do you know how to draw a dinosaur? Learn from Pittsburgh's very own Joe Wos! Joe is the founder of the ToonSeum and also the host of the Cartoon Academy, which airs on WQED and digitally. He will kick off our series with an in person appearance! Don't miss out on cartooning fun.

For grades 3&4
Step into the role of a prehistoric artist and create your own cave wall drawing using texture and various pigments. We will then use our drawings to share stories.
Register beginning May 15th.

For grades K-2
Get to see a geologist's rock and mineral collection up close and learn the basics of geology. Dig dep into the three main categories of rocks, the rock cycle, the geologic time scale, and how geologists know what rocks are under our feet.

For grades K-5
Students will determine if rocks are composed of limestone using chemicals. This class is presented by ALCOSAN, the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority.

Educators from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History are coming to visit! This hands-on class includes up-close looks at artifacts, fossils, rocks, and more.

Need some help picking out your next Summer Learning read? Love talking to your friends about your favorite books? This club is for you! We're starting off with the graphic novel, How to Talk to Your Succulent by Zoe Persico. This sweet story is for fans of Roller Girl and the author, Raina Telgemeier. Stop by the Children's Desk to pick up your copy to read before the first meeting!

Screen break! Join us for face-to-face conversation and ice-breaker games. We'll go outside when the weather permits and enjoy talking about a variety of topics from school and daily life to imaginative questions and hypothetical situations.

Let's celebrate America's 250th birthday with some delicious creativity! Members of the American Legion will teach us some important history and then provide cookies for us to decorate. How will you design yours? Get your ideas ready and join us for an informational presentation, followed by friendly competition.

Stomp, chomp, and roar your way over to the Library for a super fun, dino-filled game day! Try your hand at T-Rex Toss, compete in dino races, go on a dinosaur hunt, play Dino Dash, and more!

Kids will explore how dinosaurs lived, learn the Latin roots behind real scientific names, and invent a brand new dinosaur species of their own -complete with habitat, diet, and survival traits.

Learn about what an archeologist does and how they use artifacts to study the past. What can we learn from the things people leave behind? This class is presented by Allegheny County Park Rangers and held IN in the park. Please be prompt.

Let's transform ordinary, smooth stones into masterpieces with vibrant acrylic paint pens. Make prehistoric storytelling stones or words of kindness to pass along.

Tra-la-la-laaaa! Whether you're a seasoned fan of the series or just picking up the books for the first time, you don't want to miss this laugh-out-loud book club! We'll read the books together (a new one each time) and then participate in over-the-top antics, just like George and Harold.

Calling all future architects and engineers! Join us for a high-energy, creative, and fast-paced block-building challenge. Whether it's building the tallest tower or designing a bridge, we will be testing your imagination and creativity.

If you like puzzles, games, and using your brains and bodies to solve problems, then you'll love our Indiana Jones-inspired program. Grab your leather fedora (but leave your snakes at home) and join us for a wildly good time.

For grades K-5
Environmental educator, April Claus, will present this hands-on interactive program that introduces you to native reptiles and amphibians of Pennsylvania. Learn how to identify frogs and toads by their call, examine touchable models and learn how to identify the venomous snakes that line in our area. Meet some LIVE snakes, toads, turtles, and salamanders that are native to the northeastern U.S. We may even feed a friend or two! You will be amazed at the important role these animals play in our local ecosystem.

For grades 2-4
First, we'll learn all about how fossils are formed and then, using DIY air-dry clay, we'll experiment with different materials to see what kinds of fossils we can make.

Can you find the ten dinosaurs hidden in the Library? During the month of August, stop at the Children's Desk for the list and let the search begin! Once you've found all ten, bring the sheet back for a small prize.
