Background

In contemporary arts education, teaching, creative practice, and research no longer follow a single, linear route. They develop instead through many different pathways that cross, overlap, and sometimes move in new directions. Classroom curriculum design, collaborative projects between rural schools and local communities, educational programs in museums and cultural institutions, arts-based projects linked with counseling, healthcare, and public health, as well as interdisciplinary experiments that connect the arts with technology, design, and digital humanities, can all be seen as parts of the “DNA” of arts education. As these practices emerge, change, and reconnect in different contexts, they shape interconnected pathways of development for diverse communities and generations.

The “Interweaving and Co-Creation: Diverse Pathways of Arts Education” International Conference builds on the experience gained since 2021, when the Master’s Program in Art Education at National Changhua University of Education (NCUE) began hosting annual arts education forums and conferences. In 2026, the event further develops to foster cross-institutional, interdisciplinary, and international collaboration. It is co-organized by the Master’s Program in Art Education, Department of Fine Arts, National Changhua University of Education, and the Program of Digital Humanities and Creative Industries & the Graduate Institute 8 of Library and Information Science at National Chung Hsing University (NCHU), in association with the InSEA World Council and Asia Regional Council (ARC), the UK based Something Useful Project (SUP), and related professional associations and NGOs.

The conference aims to provide a space for exchange among arts education scholars and practitioners from Taiwan and abroad, and to explore directions and practices of arts education within contemporary, diverse societies. Through interdisciplinary dialogue and the sharing of research and practice, it seeks to deepen educators’ understanding of issues such as multicultural education, local practices, cross disciplinary collaboration, and art as social action. It also offers opportunities for master’s and doctoral students in arts-education-related fields to present and discuss their research and practice, with the aim of stimulating and strengthening their scholarly competence and research capacity.

Abstract Review

This conference invites submissions through an open call for papers. Abstracts will be reviewed by a committee of scholars and experts. Accepted submissions will be scheduled for oral presentations or poster sessions. Detailed guidelines for poster presentations will be announced on the conference website later.

InSEA membership status for 2026 will be considered for additional points in the abstract review process.

Target Contributors

Scholars and practitioners in arts education, as well as master’s and doctoral students from education- and arts-related departments and programs in Taiwan and abroad, are welcome to submit proposals.

Conference Sub-themes

1. Healing Practices and Social Empathy

Focusing on practices and research that examine how the arts generate healing and empathy at both individual and societal levels, including:

The arts as a medium for healing, care, and self-awareness (such as art therapy, expressive arts, and creative accompaniment)
The design and implementation of curricula or programmes that integrate Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) with the arts
Arts-based interventions related to social issues, multiculturalism, social justice, civic engagement, and University Social Responsibility (USR)

2. Arts Teaching and Learning Practices

Exploring teaching and learning processes in arts education across different levels of schooling and informal learning settings, including:

Curriculum design, teaching methods, and action research
Interpretations of learners’ works, learning narratives, and reflections
Creative arts practices and connections with local communities
Arts participation and support systems for rural communities, marginalized groups, or specific populations (such as immigrant families and Indigenous communities)

3. Research and Knowledge Innovation in Art Education

Focusing on research and knowledge building related to arts education, including but not limited to:

Developments in arts education theory, curriculum and instruction, assessment, and analysis of learning outcomes
Analyses and critiques of education policies, curricula, and institutional structures
Arts-based approaches and other arts-related or cross-disciplinary research designs and outcomes

4. Technological Applications and Interdisciplinary Futures

Exploring innovative possibilities arising from encounters between the arts, technology, and other fields, including:

Arts × Technology practices (such as AI, STEAM, digital humanities, interaction design, game-based learning, etc.)
New media and digital creation, and the application and reflection on online and hybrid teaching platforms
Models of interdisciplinary collaboration linking the arts with science, the humanities, design, medicine, and other fields
