This event is a pre-conference workshop for the 17th International Conference of Digital Archives and Digital Humanities (DADH 2026). The workshop will introduce methods for using AI models to rapidly extract linear features from historical maps, as well as textual annotations such as parcel numbers from historical cadastral maps, and subsequently convert them into structured spatial data for the construction of historical GIS databases.
The workshop will also demonstrate how generative AI can be integrated with GIS technologies for mapmaking, using geospatial data and cartographic conventions to improve the accuracy of AI-generated maps and reduce errors or fabricated geographic information produced by generative AI. In addition, it will introduce approaches to research design for evaluating the spatial understanding and spatial reasoning capabilities of Vision-Language Models (VLMs), exploring the potential applications of generative AI in geospatial information and digital humanities research.
