In honor of the theme "Black History is American History," students in grades 7-8 and 9-12 are invited to reflect on the profound impact of African American history makers on society.
Choose a prominent African American leader, activist, inventor or artist and explore their contributions. Discuss how their work has influenced and shaped the political, technical or artistic landscape, as well as how their work impacts society. Consider the challenges and barriers they may have faced in pursuing their endeavors. In what ways can we celebrate and continue to support Black leaders, inventors or artists in the present day?
OR for 9-12 grades: Research current events that frame Black History as invalid or harmful to other ethnic groups: Discuss the current challenges to museums, parks and schools to display and teach about Black History. Give an example or two of recent efforts to erase or remove Black History displays, reduce funding for Black History research, or impede teaching in schools and colleges.
