Dear Sisters and Friends,
I hope that this July Justice Desk Update finds you all well.ย There will be no update in August and this might explain why this edition is so full of news which we hope catches your attention. There has been a lot on! We would be so grateful if you could bring this update to those whom you know would like to be kept in the loop but who might not have the gift of the internet. You need only engage with that which catches your attention.
In this issue you are being invited to learn a little more about how we collaborate in areas of justice that are relevant to our Presentation Charism and our IPA commitments.ย Below there are reports from:

Homework!
Will you help?ย
Last year the hard won EU Corporate Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) was enacted, to ensure that large companies checked their supply and value chains for Human Rights and Environmental Rights infractions. They are mandated to outline how they will deal with any such infractions as well as to publish policies that show how they would mitigate the occurrence of such infractions in the first place.ย
To cut a long story short, there is a newly published set of proposals entitled Omnibus 1 that claims to simplify the CSDDD when in actual fact it waters it down to ensure that there remains a 'competitive' advantage to EU companies. There has been no negotiation in this regard. It is likely that the Irish government will support this EU Omnibus legislation and so I wrote four letters similar to the letter below to create a little bit of fuss with respect to the ongoing issues.ย
Recently the Irish Coalition for Business and Human Rights have tackled the government on their stance relative to the forthcoming Omnibus 1. You can read about their efforts here in the Irish Times and if you choose to pen your own letter this article may indeed be of help to you.ย ย
Maybe you will let us know if you take this action and more particularly if you get a reply. I will publish any replies that I get.ย
I sent four Handwritten Letter to those named below. Two to local representatives and two to the ministers with direct responsibility for Ireland's response to the Omnibus 1 Legislation.ย
One Minute Video Campaign 2024 - 2025 at รras An Uachtarรกin with President and Sabina Higgins.ย
On May 21st last (2025) 12 schools were invited to รras an Uachtarรกin as guests of President Michael D. Higgins and Sabina Higgins to showcase the Global Citizenship One Minute Video Campaign. Below you will find some photos (and a gallery of more). Above is a compilation video that was shown to the President with clips from all the videos submitted. We have taken some time to share all of the videos that were sent in with other schools and teachers as the inspiration for those schools yet to take their action.ย ย ย
Why not take some time to check out over 35 of the One-Minute Videos that have been sent to us for consideration for presentation at this year's event at the รras. They are from all all over the country (including Northern Ireland) and are representative of all ages attending schools in Ireland. They are indeed truly uplifting! Click HERE to view.ย ย
Reminder:ย APT Ireland Campaign (HERE) Would you be free to put posters / calling cards in Garda Stations, Churches, Chemists, Doctor's Surgeries or other healh care settings? If so contact me and I will make sure that you get as many as you need to take up this important challenge.ย
Studies from the US, UK and Canada indicate that 87% of human trafficking victims will attend a health facility during the first year being trafficked. Less than 1% are identified. The most common services attended are accident and emergency units, maternity services and general practice.
A Health & Social Care Education and Human Trafficking group (HSCEHT) has been established to unite representatives around a call for delivery of awareness training to all students in healthcare disciplines.
The group includes representatives from a wide cross-section of interested persons from national regulatory, policy, non-governmental agencies and education including RCSIโs Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery.

A new landmark research study by the Irish Network Against Racism (INAR) and published today by the Policing Authority reveals that people of African descent and Brazilians in Ireland report widespread discriminatory policing, racial profiling, and a deep lack of trust in An Garda Sรญochรกna.
The study presents the most detailed evidence to date of the negative experiences of policing among these communities including accounts of traumatic stop-and-search incidents, including strip searches, wrongful arrests, and property damage, with long-lasting psychological effects and ongoing impacts on employment, study, and family life. The findings also note the prevalence of vexatious charges brought after traffic stops, particularly against Black drivers. Coalition 2030 and the revised work plan and the need to prepare for the forthcoming High Level Political Forum (HLPF) at the UN,
In early June I attended the Coalition 2030 Plenary at the Rediscovery Centre in Ballymun, Dublin. (Below are some of the photos of the day.) One of the tasks at hand is to review the current SDG implementation work plan to ensure that it remains on point. A number of points were made and appropriate and timely changes have been made and we are currently voting on this document HERE. This is an ambitious set of actions and proposals and the hope is that with the support of the Coalition members we will be able to achieve as much as possible. It is important to remember that the Irish Government is not prioritising the SDGs and this is more than disappointing.ย
We have also worked to prepare a plan of work for the two Coalition 2030 delegates who will represent us at the UN HLPF in July in New York. (Neither Ireland nor the UK will be presenting on their SDG progress this time around through the UN Voluntary National Review process.)
