Abstract
This presentation redefines the role of English Language Teaching (ELT) within the context of globalization, emphasizing the integration of interdisciplinary literacy and global citizenship education. Traditional paradigms of ELT, which primarily concentrate on linguistic proficiency and standardized assessments, are increasingly viewed as insufficient for equipping learners to navigate the complexities of the 21st century. The discussion advocates for a transformative shift in ELT, calling for incorporating intercultural competence, critical thinking, and ethical responsibility into language education. It contends that by embracing an ecological approach, ELT can act as a platform for fostering global awareness, encouraging learners to engage critically with global issues, appreciate cultural diversity, and assume active roles as responsible global citizens. This ecological perspective underscores the significance of interdisciplinary inquiry, collaborative problem-solving, and the integration of real-world contexts into ELT curricula. Through this approach, the discussion highlights how ELT can prepare learners with the vital skills and mindset necessary to tackle global challenges. By focusing on these competencies, ELT cultivates effective communicators and empowers learners to be active contributors to a more interconnected and sustainable world. This ecological approach enables ELT learners to navigate diverse sociocultural landscapes and contribute meaningfully to creating a more equitable and sustainable future.
