The Metro Mayors Coalition MMC) is a group of 17 cities and towns in the urban core of Metro Boston whose leaders gather to exchange information and create solutions for common problems. MAPC helped to establish the MMC in 2001 and provides staff support and policy expertise to this group.

July 2025
Local youth, community-based organization workers, law enforcement officials, and guest speakers came together at Boston University for the annual Metro Mayors Shannon Grant summer activity.
This year, attendees learned and collaborated through a new structure - a Shannon Youth Conference - which included presentations and hands-on engagement.
More than 125 youth from nine cities/towns participated

Metro Mayors 2025 Climate Summit
May 2025
On May 12, 2025, mayors and managers from the seventeen MMC communities gathered at the Museum of Science in Boston to commit to, and formally sign, new regional climate goals (the original goals were signed in 2021).
These updated goals will guide the next five to ten years of shared action while meeting the challenges of the moment.
The new commitment envisions a net zero region by 2050 and outlines actions to partner with the state to achieve 50 percent emissions reductions by 2030.

Metro Mayors Coalition Municipal Finance Research | Summer 2025
Over the summer of 2025, a subcommittee of the Metro Mayors Coalition met to better understand municipal finance challenges facing Coalition members. The charge to the group was to better define the challenges and potential opportunities moving forwards. Anticipated reductions in both federal and state funding, uncertainty in commercial development markets, and the ongoing housing crisis necessitate a careful consideration of how municipal services are funded.
MAPC reviewed reports on municipal finance challenges and compiled and analyzed data available through the Division of Local Services Municipal Databank to better characterize the challenges municipalities are facing around rising costs and the various response options available, given the limitations set forth through Prop 2.5. This work is expected to continue through 2026.
MAPC Awarded Two Grants to Support MMC Housing Task Force Work | April 2025
MAPC was awarded grants from both the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities (EOHLC) and the Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC) in early 2025, to support a local implementation project of the Metropolitan Mayors Coalition (MMC) Housing Task Force called Rightsizing Zoning.
Working with the 17 MMC Task Force communities, the work includes analyzing discrepancies between the type of new development that zoning incentivizes and desirable built form. The goal of the project is to provide zoning recommendations for streamlining the permitting and development of new housing that complements historical development patterns and achieves community goals.
