To ensure that the goals of the Iowa National Barrel Horse Association are met, a specific Code of Conduct for all Iowa NBHA shows has been written. This code is based on the NBHA 2009 Rules and the Directors Handbook. All Iowa NBHA Directors and Representatives will have final authority to uphold these rules.
NBHA GOALS Our goals are to increase the number of participants, improve the quality of shows and enhance the image of barrel racing. These rules have been adopted to address the needs of NBHA members, promote fairness, eliminate confusion, and assist show organizers.
Any act in connection with an NBHA sanctioned show or other NBHA business in violation of this section by a member of the family of an NBHA member may be deemed to have been committed by the NBHA member and subject him or her to penalties.
Any act deemed not prejudicial to the best interests of the NBHA may result in the suspension of a member, including but not limited to the following.
Using abusive or intemperate language or attempting to threaten, bribe, influence or harass any contestant, show official or NBHA official. 2 Also, any remarks made with the intent to cast aspersions on the character or integrity of an NBHA official or show official.
Moving or attempting to move markers at any time.
Use of electronic and/or remotely controlled devices to alter the outcome of a run.
Abuse of a horse in any way.
Competing while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Misidentifying a horse in any NBHA class will disqualify a contestant.
Other conduct that is not in the best interest of the NBHA or its members.
Failure to make good on a returned check to the NBHA or to any NBHA sanctioned event, or to any other association that has a cooperative agreement with the NBHA on returned checks.
Show Management and/or NBHA Directors at their sole discretion shall have the authority to disqualify or deny entry to any horse they deem dangerous to the rider, or to other individuals, animals or property.
Contestants must attempt to make the fastest run possible. Any obvious attempt to “pull up” or pace their run may result in the following penalties – 1st offense – Warning, 2nd offense - $25 fine payable to the district hosting the show, 3rd offense – 3 month suspension from NBHA. At the State Show, anyone who attempts to pull up or “pace” their run will be disqualified from that go-round.
Names of suspended members may be published in the Barrel Horse News.
A member who has been suspended, disqualified, or denied points under this section may appeal to an appeals committee of NBHA members and directors appointed by the appropriate State, Area or Regional Director. The State or Area Director will determine the date, time and location of such meeting. The decisions of such appeals committee shall be final and binding on all parties.
NBHA events are family events. While the Iowa NBHA does not prohibit the consumption of alcohol at our events, if you must drink, drink responsibly. Inappropriate behavior or actions will result in dismissal from the arena area and will result in disqualification from the NBHA show. Under-age drinking will not be tolerated and will result in disqualification.
Children should be supervised at all times. It is the duty of the responsible adult to ensure the safety of their children.
1 This includes any husband, father, wife, mother, relative or person with any relationship with an NBHA member whether related to or not.
2 This includes State Show Committee Members, personnel who are assisting the Committee and Grounds Personnel.
There is to be no riding of bikes, scooters, hoverboards or basically anything wheeled in any of the barns. This includes by the arena. If we catch anyone riding around in the barns, they will be disqualified. Parents, if your kid is not competing and you're allowing them to do this, you will be the one getting DQed. Strollers are an exception when they are being used for their intended purpose.
There is to be no excessive cellphone usage in the warm-up or holding pens. Violators will be receive one warning before disqualification. This will be up to the show committee's discretion.
These are safety issues and not up for discussion.
