For the filming location, we filmed them all at different areas of a famous street in Surabaya 'Jl. Tunjungan' Fortunately, we were able to complete all the scenes in one day thanks to this and no additional days were needed since all of the locations were in walking distance and the time filming started was 6 PM, we had all night as we had no curfew for the day. Thankfully we were able to start on time and there were no complications with finding the location and meeting up with our actor thanks to constant communication all throughout the way there. Once we met up with the actor, we did some touch ups by disheveling his hair and making minor adjustments such as keeping the top buttons of his shirt open to show distress and messiness to contrast his seemingly formal suit.
The scenes we had planned on filming were:
Running scenes achieved from tracking and reverse tracking
Lip syncing scenes
Closeup shots
Smoking and drinking scene
We first started by meeting up at 'Zonakacamata' and took pictures for the album covers and instagram posts. For this, we instructed our actor to stay still while we took blurred pics by increasing the shutter speed of our camera. We made use of the app 'Reeflex' to adjust the camera settings of my iPhone 14 Pro. The following are the photos (with me taking the pictures) we took that we planned on using as we thought they looked good and well matched out concept.
We then moved on to the next location which was an area that bands make use to play music on on the busy streets, here we shot our first lip syncing and dancing scene. We let passerbys know that we needed to film for our coursework since this is a public area and thankfully, none of them had walked past the camera midst shot. We were able to successfully get the best video after the first few shots and retakes after reviewing the videos since I am also the editor, the video's quality was good enough and we moved to the next location.
The next location was in front of a restaurant called 'Alltime Buns' which had a retro vibe to it and we thought it'd be perfect. Since we filmed on a weekday, the location wasn't as crowded so it was fairly easy for us to film without disturbances. Here we filmed multiple scenes, the moving lip syncing scene, sitting down scene, as well as the scene with pink lights. Quinella and I had surveyed the location beforehand and found one of the trees had pink lights which we thought would be perfect for the music video as it was a strict contrast to the green theme we chose to do. The filming went well and we were able to finish filming there after a couple takes. Since our actor did not fully remember the lyrics, we had come up with a solution by putting on the lyric video on my iPad where the screen was bigger and he could read off of the screen whilst looking at the camera at the same time thanks to the placement of the iPad being right above the camera.
Moving onto the next location on our list, we walked to 'Club Metro' which is a local sober bar to shoot scenes of our actor 'drinking' to show the unhealthy coping mechanism we wanted to portray in our music video. This was also the perfect location as it also had a photobooth which was one of the locations where we wanted to shoot one of the scenes we had planned to it was a two birds with one stone situation. We also took more pictures for our social media so it made our filming and one-day period more efficient and time saving. We had some trouble with how to operate the photobooth at first and we had to ask the staff and the people lining up to take pictures permission to film there, because of this we had to film quickly. Despite the rushed situation, we were able to get a really good take so it only took about 10 minutes. We filmed the photobooth scene by stationing a tripod with the camera on 0.5x zoom to capture the whole photobooth. We also asked permission from the staff to film inside the bar and they gladly said yes and wished us good luck :D, the shoot went smoothly and the results were very satisfactory and exactly what I had in mind.
We then proceeded to film our next scene. We had already asked our actor if he was comfortable with smoking for a few shots and he confirmed it was okay so we pre-bought cigarettes. The next scene is in an empty parking lot which we had to get permit from the security guard in order to be able to shoot, he was unrelectant at first which made us worry as this was one of the scenes we had wanted to film for a long time but after a while of convincing he agreed to let us film as long as we were professional about it. This scene is crucial as it was to show how despite the energetic feel of the rest of the music video, our artist is actually struggling inside and is trying to suppress his negative emotions, thus the use of substances as we researched that many make use of cigarettes as a way to cope due to the nicotine content being able to give a sense of relaxation due to the adrenaline it releases, thus his acts of craziness such as running around the streets.
The final scene was shot in 'Hotel Majapahit' which is a historical landscape of my city of Surabaya. Unfortunately, we had forgotten to take pictures of us filming at the location and since all the footage was already done and there was no need to review them, we chose to not do retakes and come back to take pictures. The shoot there went well, we filmed in two locations, inside of the hotel's pub 'The Maj Pub & Dine' where we filmed the billiard scenes - the scene's purpose is to illustrate partaking in different activities and hobbies to keep the mind occupied and to forget his painful memories. The other location was in front of Hotel Majapahit itself where we filmed multiple reverse tracking scenes for the second verse of the song. Overall, our filming went well and there were no scenes that need to be reshot as we took multiple satisfactory ones for each filming location.
We compiled all the pictures and videos into a shared album as we both had iOS devices
15 December 2023
The first thing I did was compile the best scenes available into a single google drive (check below)
After doing so I imported all the files so that it will be easier during the production process in order to have access to all the resources. I also imported the song into the app and into the timeline of my project. This took a decent amount of time due to having to convert the files into their suitable formats for editing and the large size of each video. I shared the same google drive with my groupmate Quinella so she too had access to the videos and images I had deemed of good quality to use for our media product. This is also to prevent the mixup of good clips and unwanted clips from happening, so it made my job way easier.
My editing software of choice is CapCut, as it is simple and it has many in-app options, fonts, and features that will make the editing process much easier. It also has inbuilt stabilisation feature and advanced color grading such as HSL and color curves.
The device I used to edit my production work is my PC as it has a bigger screen so I can see the details much clearer and it also runs mch smoother in comparison to my iPad which is prone to lagging due to the file size. There are also much more features in the computer version of CapCut in comparison to the mobile version that is on my iPad which made it the most suitable medium for me to work on my project.
Overall Editing Layout
After the import has finished loading all the clips, I began arranging the clips and syncing them in accordance to the rhythm of the song and making sure the lip sync scenes are in sync with the music, which proved to be the biggest challenge for me as even the smallest difference was very visible and it would exponentially decrease the quality of the final product. I also sped up some and slowed down some of the clips that involved a lot of movement, such as the dancing and running clips to match the beat of the song and make it more satisfying for the audience to view.
This process alone took me around 2 days to get done.
Amongst all of the processes, this was by far the most challenging and took me the longest as finding the correct effect to achieve the best possible result. One of the main problems was that the effects would overlap and was not long enough to last the entire clip as they were only able to cater up until a certain time. Thankfully, I wsa able to overcome this issue by overlapping the effects to one another (like what I did with the wobble in the following picture)
I did this process repeatedly to all the different clips in order to achieve the effects I wanted and to make the product look like what I had envisioned in my head. Some of the effects I used are as such:
Tilt shift lens to create a sense of distortion due to the effect of the substances
Wobble as prementioned to create a dizzy effect
Zoom lens to make the scenes more dynamic and less boring
Radial blur to allow the audience to see how the artist sees when he is under the influence
Horizontal open and close to signify the beginning and the end of the music video
Starred clips are effects
I honestly thought this process would take the fastest but boy was I wrong, initially I had color graded all the clips at once in hopes that they would all look good but as I reviewed it, the clips' colors were all over the place due to the different lightings of the different locations. As a result, I had to adjust the clips one by one to get the color I hoped for through CapCut's adjustment feature
In addition to the individual HSL adjustments alongside the use of color curves to make my work more natural, I used the filter "Green Lake" to achieve a brighter green like I's hope for.
After finishing my first draft, I had asked my teammate Quinella on her thought on the finished work, the comments she made are as such
The green is too lime and not too similar to the digipack's green
I had forgotten to edit in the end credits
The shots needed to be more stabilised
Too many static frames, the effects needed to be more visible
Upon hearing this feedback I immediately got to reediting and readjusting all the colors in order to match our ideal version of the music video. My groupmate Quinella helped me in creating the end credits through the app Canva and I imported and edited it into the timeline as soon as it was done.
