Gakushuin is a school with unique history. Its origin is a school established in Kyoto for the members of the Imperial and peerage families. The school was established in 1847, before the modern Japan opened itself to the world. Gakushuin moved to Tokyo in 1877 and remained to be a school for the Imperial and nobility’s children until 1949, when it was finally turned into an ordinary private university. It is now a university consisting of five faculties (faculties of law, economics, letters, science and international social studies), with more than 9,000 students.

In 2019, Gakushuin University launched the program on “space utilisation studies”. Sharing the global concerns about the sustainable use of the outer space, we have developed the transdisciplinary approach towards the outer space’s better future. The space law is its important element. We believe that the Moot Court Competition and the symposium on the space law becomes an excellent opportunity both for the participating teams visiting Gakuhsuin and the local students hosting the participants to think about the disciplined and prudent use of the outer space.
