See you on August 20th outside! We've been having super attendance.
2025 Strathcona Resources Employee Cycling Program
RSVP here for the August 20th Outdoor Ride.
New to Strathcona and/or want to register for the club? Sign up here!
We transition outdoors on May 28th 2025!
We have taken our successful indoor program and moved it outside between May 28th and the end of August. We have a consistent weeknight (Wednesdays) and time (6:30pm) to meet with your Strathcona team outside and get to enjoy our hobby exploring the roads and pathways in and around Calgary.
Here is the schedule and some answers to your questions.
May 28th is our first group ride and then every Wednesday after that. The meet location changes periodically so that we can show you more routes through the summer. Meeting right on the edge of town ensures we can begin the ride directly on roadways that are quieter and more flowy, so we can focus on you instead of traffic and streetlights.
If you plan on joining us for any or all of the outdoor rides, please complete this registration so we can ensure you are covered under our limited liability coverage provided by Oasis Insurance. You MUST have completed this registration PRIOR to coming out to a ride.
You will get an RSVP link several days prior to that week's ride. Just like the indoor rides.
How the outdoor cycling works:
We meet every Wednesday evening (except July 9th for Stampede) through summer starting May 28th at 6:30pm. The start location will be determined well in advance. You will get an email no later than Monday of that week indicating where we're starting the ride.
There is no commitment in terms of how often you need to show up to the rides throughout the summer. We realize this is also the time families go on vacation! Simply come when you can.
To ensure our whole team feels supported and included when we shed the confines of the inside and transition outdoors, we'll integrate with The Doctrine's own Wednesday night social club as a 'Club within a club'. This ensures we maintain the connection and it adds the ability to ensure everyone has someone to ride with. We'll dedicate beginner and intermediate guides and coaches so that it truly doesn't matter what level you are at.
To get the 'vibe' of the outdoor club, you can go to the overall Doctrine's Outdoor Social Cycling Club webpage. We get cyclists of ALL abilities attending. We typically leave the parking lot in groups separated in ability and experience and level of confidence. We can handle whatever level you are at.
When will I see the Strathcona cyclists that are at a completely different level as me? You can always ride together, however, realistically, there will be Strathcona club mates that are at a different speed and experience level. The beauty of these rides is that you'll have a small group to ride with and everyone meets post-ride for a hang out tailgater. This is where you can further connect with your Strathcona club mates and you'll find you make a lot of other friends through summer as well.
What happens if you don't have a bike currently? We can absolutely work with you on procuring a new or used bike that is appropriate for your level and experience and budget. We should even be able to loan you a bike if you simply want to try it out and see if you enjoy it (you will!).
What happens if you only have a MTN bike? We love MTN biking at The Doctrine, however, this group will primarily be on road or hybrid bikes with slick tires. It is really tough to keep up on a treaded MTN bike and we find it simply becomes frustrating for the cyclist. We will work with you to get you on a road or hybrid bike!
What do I need to bring to the ride? The main 'tool' you need is a well functioning bike. This means one with brakes, gearing, and tires in good condition. If you are wondering if your bike is ready to roll, just bring it by the Doctrine Studio and we'll ensure you are good. The only other essential item is a helmet that is not older than 5 years and shows no sign of damage or deterioration. The next thing is comfortable clothing that will allow you to be on a saddle for about 90min. Outside cycling is much easier on the tender parts as you are moving around, standing, and taking the occasional break, so if it worked inside for 60min, it's almost guaranteed to work outside well. If you like to drink water on rides, then pack a water bottle or two.
How early should I be for the ride? You don't need to come super early. You just need enough time to have yourself and bike ready to roll at 6:30pm. So around 6:20pm should be plenty of time.
What if I miss some rides? Do I get behind? No way! The beauty of the club is that you attend when you can and make your own progress. We'd love if you got into the habit of joining us, however, we know life gets busy sometimes. We'll ensure to value your time and make each ride worth your effort to attend. The focus is on being social while having fun at a healthy and active hobby.
Are we going to have our own jerseys? Possibly! We are in the process of figuring out if this is in the cards.
Do I just show up for the outdoor rides? Close, but not quite. We'll actually enroll you a sanctioned club covered under the insurance provider Oasis Sport Insurance. This way, we all have liability insurance while we're riding and feel comfortable cycling together. Please see the link above to register for the Outdoor component.
Can I still be part of the club if I don't plan to ride outside? Absolutely! We'll be starting up the indoor program once the weather turns and it starts getting darker earlier. Then you can start coming to the awesome indoor rides again.
Strathcona is pleased to present a unique, all levels and abilities, cycling and spinning wellness program.
This weekly session is available to all staff and is a no barrier, all inclusive opportunity to workout and connect with your Strathcona team.
Classes are held in a state of the art cycling facility closely located nearby, followed by snacks and beverages provided post ride. Whether you are a seasoned cyclist and would like to progress on your road bike, bike-curious or simply appreciate a good workout using a spin bike, this program is for you.
If you have any questions about the program or want clarification on anything for the indoor classes, please don't hesitate to ask Doctrine head coach Trev Williams and/or fellow Strathcona team member Sarah Molnar or Angie Lau!

The Strathcona Cycling Program provides its employees a consistent time and place to meet up and enjoy a great hobby that promotes an active lifestyle, connection, and networking. The indoor rides will start at 5:30 pm Wednesday evenings on October 9th and continue into April 2025, at which point we'll take the club outdoors!
If you are new to cycling don't be intimidated to register and join us. If you don't own a bike now, don't let that stop you from joining the club. For the indoor season, you don't need one. Let Trev, Sarah, or Angie know that you would like to continue past April with the club and we'll work with you to ensure you are set up correctly.
We focus on providing valuable training for cyclists of all skill levels, from absolute beginner to advanced. We are a friendly and inclusive cycling group and we appreciate your efforts to support this culture.
Starting Oct. 8th 2025 we will host you for indoor classes before we move outside at the end of May.
Below answers some questions regarding how to participate in the Indoor Program.
Please join us for a 55 minute indoor spin and cycling class and subsequent hangout with light dinner and beverages provided.
What's the difference between spin and cycling? It's really only what you're sitting on. In our studio, you have the option to bring your own bike to ride on for the class, or simply show up and use one of our spin bikes. If you have a look at the picture below, you will see participants on both spin bikes and their own personal bikes.
I've never been on a bike before, is this ok? Absolutely. We are starting the club in the winter to give you the opportunity to join us, learn the hobby, learn to love it, and figure out how to get you cycling outside come May!
What do I need to bring to class? If you are coming to the class and using a spin bike, then all you need are comfortable gym clothes or cycling shorts, good runners, a water bottle, and a towel. That's it! If you are planning on bringing your bike, just touch base with Trev to let him know what type of bike you're bringing and come about 10 minutes early.
How early should I be for class? You don't need to come super early. You just need enough time to change between your work and gym clothes and throw your runners on. So around 5:20 should be plenty of time.
Can I shower after cycling? Absolutely. There are showers in both change rooms.
What if I miss classes? Do I get behind? No way! The beauty of starting the club inside is that you attend when you can and make your own progress. We'd love if you got into the habit of joining us, however, we know life gets busy sometimes. We'll ensure to value your time and make each class worth your effort to attend.
